Hit 200k miles today. She drives as smooth and strong as the first day I bought her brand new. All stock. No mods.
Engine has never been opened, though I am pretty proactive with preventative maintenance. (Oil changes, belts, harmonic balancer, engine mounts etc). I know some have had a host of carbon, injector and other challenges. Thankfully we have been lucky to have had a relatively smooth ride for the first 200k miles and look forward to the next 200k. Kudos to BMW of Alexandria and BMW of Annapolis for providing great care to this incredible machine. |

What have you done to avoid the CBU issues? Highway driving? Additives? Luck 🙄? Do you have a ticket for the mega millions?

I think mostly luck and a bit of good care. :-). Driving wise, most miles are around the DC beltway and surrounding metro area. Occasional longer out of state trips. Try to minimize local, low speed city driving. (Have a tesla for that). Try to stick to Shell diesel. No additives. Let the engine warm up for about 3 mins when cold. Higher RPMs only after engine reached optimal temps. Try to let regen run full cycle whenever possible. Has always been garage kept around the clock.

that's amazing. I have an 11 M-sport too, same color wheels and all. Tint even looks the same. I bought it at 57k miles and it had a warranty CBU done at 39k miles and I just did another and removed the EGR at 103 k. hope you see 400k and I hope I do too lol

So clean!!
Where is the dirt and dents? Mine doesn't look nearly that nice at 175k. But I am at least the third owner and the last one liked to curb check everything. |

More compared to what exactly? You have data that the rest of us don't?
Chains on the M57 will never be a maintenance item like they are on the N57s. And it's not even close. Maintain your shit, lots and lots of high mileage M57s out there.

Maintenance isn't always the key to the chain snapping. I'm not going to find that data for you but you can. But chains are in fact snapping more and more as time passes. It's not a comparison to anything.

Of course you aren't going to find the data because it's a non issue. Sure they'll be chain failures, but because you hear of a few floating around on the internet the timing chains are now a maintenance item? Eh.. That's an awful big assumption.

I go strictly by what buddies in the industry tell me. They're the ones working on these day in and day out.

Yes they can break. So can cranks. Cams can be wiped. Rings can wear. None are typical none have a service interval. Doesn't mean the engine should be rebuilt as preventative maintenance. Quality and diligent oil changes are most likely the deciding factor for most of this.

Chain stretch?
Congrats to the PM. I'm only 20k away from the 200k miles mark and was worrying about the timing chain myself. I started this thread to get some data:
https://www.e90post.com/forums/showt...4&page=1&pp=22 I see some very experienced forum members on here, so maybe we can all try to get some more data into the excel sheet and see if we can get a correlation between miles driven and CAM timing going? |

Funny, I was looking at that thread lastnight for some reason. I'm inching up to 200k. Not really worried about chains but grabbing data is easy enough and might help some people out.
