Just kind of need to vent, so please don't flame me!

I'm a Senior in high school, and was going back to the tire shop that forgot to replace my center cap the other day. On the way there (and of course in the middle of no where) I REALLY had to go to the bathroom. The whole road to the tire shop was a 2 laned ,55MPH straight road. Everyone was driving 5-10 above, but me in my quest for a bathroom I was for sure going faster. As I went to pass someone, I saw a sheriff in the divider and I knew it was over...

He clocked me at 75 but saw me braking just before ... I never drive irresponsibly (excessive speeding, recklessly, on the phone, anything!). My ticket is for 70 in a 55 and is a $30 fine, $188 in court costs. He told me if he would've got me for the full 75 MPH it would've been a misdemeanor reckless driving and I would've got my license suspended for a month and would've been arrested until my parents got the car and me.

I know I was extremely lucky and plan on paying the ticket myself but since I pay for my own insurance as well so I wanted to know if you guys know of any way to offset the rate increase (classes, courses ect.)? Will the company still re-evaluate when I'm 25 to lower the rates? The ticket cost isn't what I'm concerned about... I know my insurance will be much higher than it already is. I know you always take the risk of being caught when speeding, but definitely a lesson learned.

Hope my post isn't too long, and thanks for listening.

Edit: Thanks for your help guys! I got it down to "Improper Equipment" and have to go to a 4 hour defensive driving course. Costs about $300 but will not be on my record!

Sorry to hear 75 in 55 shouldn't be reckless driving. I was arrested for reckless driving doubling the speed limit and apparently which is a load of crap swerving erratically puting others lives in danger. Speeding alone can't dictate an arrest for reckless driving... At least it wasn't in my case. Maybe someone could shed some light on this but In any case don't sweat your ticket you could probably get it reduced if its your first ticket. Oh yeah mine was 54 in a 25

that 75 in a 55 misdemeanor thing is total bs.

the last ticket i got was 83 in a 55 and the guy gave me a ticket for speeding and let me go. no arrest, no reckless driving.

although laws may be different in NC

instead of paying it though, i would go to court and try and get it reduced. i've gotten most of mine reduced just for going and talking to the attorney there or whoever they have you talk to.

if it's reduced your insurance won't go up

If you drive beamer, speeding tickets have to be calculated with in your car budget, hehe. Maybe the officer was trying to scare you "straight", never heard about 75 being reckless driving anywhere..

Depends on the state. In Virginia, 20 mph over the posted limit is considered reckless driving. So 40 in a 20 would be considered reckless.

The LEO was correct -- anything above 15 MPH over the speed limit or above 80 MPH is considered a misdemeanor in NC. Don't simply pay the fine -- go to court. The best option is to lawyer up (shouldn't be too expensive) or, if nobody in your household has used the "prayer for judgement (PFJ) plea in the last three years, you can go that route. But if you do the latter, you had better not get another violation within the next three years or you'll be in a world of hurt.

I got my first (and only) speeding ticket back in my senior year of high school, in my dad's car, on prom night. It certainly made things memorable. Anyway, when I got mine I was able to get it deferred. This meant that it didn't go on my record or increase my rates. However, my $150 ticket turned into about $300 to pay for the deferment.

i got a few speeding tickets dont sweat it, next time get it out of state so your insurance doesnt see it haha.

if your gonna go fast i recommend going to a track a couple of times it really lets you let loose.

Also i stopped speeding as much as i used to but i will still go faster than the speed limit at 5AM on my way to work, Valentine V1 always saved me, also on my vegas trips. Great piece of equipment to have, your parents may not approve at first, but its a nice safety net.

The ticket should say how you were clocked, radar or lidar. Which one? Oh and never just pay a speeding ticket. Most times you can just plea it down with the DA even w/o a lawyer.

Definitely go to court. Since this is your first ticket, the judge will most likely put you on probation and tell you to go to Defensive Driving class or do community service. It will still cost about the same in costs, but your insurance won't see it.

Definitely get a radar detector and if you want to go further get Laser Shifters.

Definitely go to court and try to get the points dropped; as long as the town gets their fine they could really care less if you get points unless you're a real dick. In NJ you can get "Unsafe Driving" which is basically a 400 dollar fine but no points. Considering your insurance will likely go up by at least 400 dollars the first year, it pays for itself. You can only do that so often though. Just don't get another one and problem solved!

PLEASE don't get a lawyer for a 15 over speeding ticket haha.

I'm for sure going to court to have it reduced/dropped. My ticket was kind of weird... It doesn't really look like "normal" tickets and some of the info on it is strange. For race (I'm Black and White) it's marked "other" and the traffic was "heavy" at 2 PM in the middle of nowhere?! Haha doesn't it have your race on your license? And it doesn't say anywhere on it how he got my speed. I told the sheriff I was doing 70-75 though because I had no clue how fast I actually was going. You don't even feel it in these cars, especially when your music is turned up. Thank God I don't have a 335 or I would probably be riding a moped! Here's a pic of the ticket though, doesn't it look different? I know the last one my Mom got in California looked a lot different

I'm also a senior in high school (well actually I graduated this year so I no longer am) and I got my first ticket last week. 78 in a 60, cop said nothing about reckless driving nor did he give me a hard time at all (besides giving me the ticket). It is a two lane road that I have driven on literally thousands of times before without ever seeing really any cops and I had just passed a Prius that was in the left lane going under the speed limit and right before I let off the accelerator I saw the cop come out from behind a tree on a side street so he basically got me at the worst possible time possible -.- I live in Texas and supposedly I can simply go to the courthouse, pay the court costs (~$100) and take Defensive Driving ($25) and it won't go on my record at all. That is what my friend did a few weeks ago at least, if that doesn't work then I have to get a lawyer or pay the $300+ ticket and watch my insurance go up... I'll try to update in a few days.

Oh how I wish california speeding tickets were that cheap. Then again if you drive an expensive car, you can afford the ticket (:

Accept responsibility and move on. You were speeding. You got a ticket. It happens. If you don't want another ticket-slow down. Not flaming you, just pointing out the obvious.

20 over the limit is reckless here in Va. Take the driving course- but be warned it probably won't be fun at all. I'm going to guess the course will be about $75
