oil level too high - really?

I just happened to check my IDrive settings today and noticed an 'oil level too high' message. However, when I check the dipstick after 10 minutes, the level is about 3mm down from the max mark. Which do I believe? Do I need to drain some?

I would trust the stick.
Didn't know they still had them, thought it was all electronics now?

Are you sure it's an oil dipstick? My previous 335 diesel and current petrol didn't/don't have one and they were both older than yours.

But if you're right, then I'd always go for a good old stick. Nothing to go wrong there with faulty sensors etc.

My 330D is a 08 and that has a dipstick. Might have changed on LCI

Well, according to RealOem (using my chassis number) mine does. The part number on the diagram matches what's on mine too.

Hmm I always thought the E9x series of cars didn't have a physical oil dipstick. I'm pretty sure mine doesn't and it's a pre LCI car to boot.

It seems to vary wildy between engines and ages of the same engines.

For sure my N54 doesn't and the N52 330i I had before that didn't either but who knows for sure?

I had a sensor failure (over-reading) on my F10 535d. It was replaced under warranty, but I always used the dipstick and never relied on the electronic level.
I've recently traded in for an F12 640i; lovely car, but I miss the dipstick. Beats me why diesels, which hardly use a drop of oil have one, whereas the petrol engines, which do burn a bit, only have the electronic system.

Conversley I would say every dervburner I've owned has burnt oil like Texas, whereas the petrols never use a drop....

I've never owned a BMW diesel though, but asking a few of the masses of 320d owners at work they all seem to use top ups.

Nice new motor BTW

The white dipstick in that picture the OP has posted is the transmission fluid dipstick.

Are you sure Dr Dave?

The realoem pic associates it with the engine, but it does seem quite rearward in its location. The picture seems to show a locating hole for the dipstick tube in the sump end of the engine oil pan.

The transmissions are classed as 'sealed for life' so that would normally preclude any measuring point.

What does the car manual identify it as???

Here's the relevant page from my manual. The car is in the stealers today for its 'security update'. I've asked them for their opinion on the oil level.

The auto box has no dipstick I'm sure. Is it not done with engine running at a certain temp, with a bung on the rear of the gearbox casing? My 330d has a dipstick in the same place as the pictures above.

I was disappointed when I discovered that my '07 320D didn't have an electronic oil level indicator - although interestingly an 'oil can' warning lamp came on fleetingly yesterday. Have to get oily fingers instead.

All those electronics on the car and no temperature gauge and no oil level indicator......
