They referred to it as the "Lastest Service Update".

The "Correction" states: PROGRAM VEHICLE FOR IDLE FLUCTUATION DURING WARM UP. FOLLOW MEASURE 45166061-03 WITH CAS.

That was their complete comment.

Does the "shake" almost feel like a misfire?

I have this ocassionaly. I hold my gas pedal at start up to where it idles ~900 rpm, and it doesn't do it as much. Theres a software fix?

Now even more reason to get rid of charcoal filter

Yes, the shaking varied from mild to quite severe but since the update has been done I have had smooth starts. Huge difference.

Another solution you can try is by adding the BMW fuel cleaner plus. Its under $20. It helped the rough start/ idle shake. Also increased fuel economy by a bit since it "cleans" parts of the engine

I've had my e90 for 2.5 years with no issues. Done some maintenance stuff myself. Yesterday I get in to go to the store and it sounds horrible...rough idle, shaking, loud. SES light comes on so I turn around and take it back to the garage. Get a code reader this morning and its P0301 - Misfire in Cylinder 1. So first thing I get new spark plugs. Got 3 in so far and then it got too dark to work and amazingly my light bulb is out and I have no more. I did fire it up and it was the same as before....noticed white smoke out of the muffler....seemed more than normal for a cold evening.... So will replace the other 3 in the morning. If I still get the code I'll switch the Cylinder 1 coil with #2 or #3. See if the code travels with the coil. That would say bad coil. If not that then I guess to the dealer.

The sound at the motor isnt a good one in my opinion. Sounds like really bad ticking... I know BMW did some valve work to reduce ticking prior to me owning it. Fingers crossed I can fix it.....

I assume fine. Not sure how to check it to be honest but would that cause the error code that I received to be thrown?

a weak battery put stress on your coils and plugs.

I had a misfire issue not too long ago and I tried the following in the exact order. Everything i've done helped me getting rid of the issue, but little by little.

Changed the plugs; still had the misfiring.
Changed gas; got rid of most of the problem for a certain period of time... until it got colder outside and my car required more power to start and run.
Changed the battery; cant feel the misfires anymore.

I just hope I didnt stretch my battery's life too long and they didnt put too much stress on the coils; otherwise coils are next.

Gotcha...

I've replaced the plugs so going to move the supposed bad coil to #3 and see if the code changes... With 80K on mine its probably not a bad idea to get a new battery in there...

80k miles!; This is definitely gonna worth it lol I got 86k KM; which is 53k miles and I was experiencing long cranks.

But what really told me that the battery was over-due is that one of my angel eyes was working during operation, but when the car's engine was stopped and the angel eyes were working as welcome lights, one of them wasnt working. That was weird.

Got all new plugs in. Switched coils 1 and 3. Started it up. Threw same Cylinder 1 misfire code but then my Battery Level warning light comes on. So going to put new battery in it and see if that works.

So put new battery in. Cleared codes...Misfire on cylinder 3 so was a bad coil. Replaced that and all good. Runs great.

Thanks to this thread now I'm a little worried about this. Lol. My car runs fine and I never had an issue with it, but on cold starts it definitely shakes for about 7 seconds then it's normal again. I'm going to run some Chevron before my next oil change in January and see if that fixes it. My battery is 3 years old, so I don't think that's it. Car has 36,000 miles so I don't think it's spark plugs. What sucks about this kind of issue is that it can be sooo many things.
