I built the garage just for the lift. I bought the plans of the internet for $40 and they were AIA certified. It was $3,500 installed, but that was 2004 before steel went way up in value. My advice is get a certified lift and stay away from the Chinese stuff. The floor ain't that clean any more....

Not saying anything, but get a real lift. That lift you got is not much less than the Rotary SPAo10 I have.

There are a number of design problems out there you could identify with just your experience. I understand your perspective because I'm an industrial designer also. I graduated from Arizona State in ID and did two internships. One in furniture design, the other with Teague Associates (Boeing interiors, BE Aerospace products, etc). I then went to Art Center and completed the Transportation Design program. I'm now designing race cars, aircraft and just about anything else for a living
Look at the problem of raising a vehicle. It is incredibly dangerous. It is often done in a jury-rigged fashion. There is often no more than one person around. I just bought a set of ramps from Harbor Freight and I'm going to test them out with our X5 before I get underneath. I have a failsafe, non-plastic, non-metallic solution for vehicle ramps that would work and be a cheap, diy solution if your interested. Ultimately though, we want to make a living from designing products that serve a purpose. I'd also like to make money! Perhaps it's an area where some ground can be gained...

I actually made plywood bases with little wood cleats for my friend/landlord's jack stands, because we have an asphalt driveway. Most jack stands are worthless on asphalt because they have no real "base" to them. I would love to be able to buy jack stands with real bases, but I've never seen a premade solution. If I had a welder I'd have just welded plate steel to the bottoms.
Additionally, an older friend has ONE jackstand that I would love to find a new pair to match. The "saddle" of the jackstand is wide and flat with a turn up on each end. Perfect for older body on frame cars where you want to support the car by the frame. Again, if I could buy these new I would be yelling TAKE MY MONEY! |

I have had my car fall before. I was within two minutes of sticking my head underneath before it fell. Because of that, I refuse to get under my car unless it is on a lift.
Reason it fell was because the body seam blends in perfectly to the rear quarter panel seam. I didn't want to lift my car too close to the center, so I went 1.5" off from the lift points and that was a big no-no. The damage was minimal. It was an MK3 MR2 and the rear qp's unbolt, so I could have fixed it really easily. |

After doing research with consumers and what's available on the market, I'm pursuing the avenue of an emergency backup safety device for use with any vehicle, in the situation that a DIYer is lifting their car to work under it. Reading across several forums and various articles, I've concluded that accidents happen and cars fall for various reasons and more often than you might think. Misuse is a major reason and cause behind accidents happening, so I'd like to make something very simple to use, "fool proof."
My initial and main concept that I'm going with so far is a deployable air bag that would, in an instant, inflate and catch the car when sensed that it is falling. Here are some quick sketches to get the concepts across. PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR OPINIONS. A device that would be attached to and left with the jack stand. That way if the jack stand slips or fails for any reason, this device would deploy and support directly where you wanted the car supported to begin with. A device that would be attached to the bottom of your car, so it CAN'T be forgotten to be put in place. A stand alone unit that you would place wherever you wanted it. Same concept, mimicking a turtle shell aesthetic/form. I'm also thinking of the idea of an inflatable airbag that would be used instead of a jackstand. So it would be inflated and then put under the car for it to sit on, with the idea that it would have more surface area contact with the car and thus be less likely that the car can slip off of it. I'm not sure if that would be a solution that would be better and users would like though. And that sort of already exists, but is used as the lifting device. Here are a few images of my inspiration I've been using to develop these concepts. I am open to all feedback. What do you like, what do you not like. Would it work, would you use it. What would you change. Or even different concepts all together. Thanks Last edited by CrimsonXV; 09-29-2012 at 06:11 PM.. |

So you like the idea of having something attached to the car? Ferrari's approach is an excellent idea, of course that is something built into the car, not an after thought.
The bushranger X-jack is pretty good but has some inherent problems. That was actually the product that sprung most of my ideas and inspiration. |

I think these are a great idea but the downside is they only work with the wheels on.

When i had my GMC Syclone i was a member of their forums and remember a member that was killed while working on his truck while at home alone, his wife was the one that found him dead under the truck when she got home from work. Very tragic and i will never forget that.

Sad story...
My uncle had his mustang fall on him while working under it, and it killed him. His jack failed and he didn't have a secondary support in place. No one was home at the time to hear him yell. My aunt found him when she got home. |

i bought ezcarlift a month ago as a bday present for myself. i don't have high garage ceiling to have real 2 post lift, and i don't want to destroy my garage floor with the max jax. so ezcarlift is my best option.
loving it so far. i hate jacks and jack stands, i have 2 sets of jacks and 4 sets of jack stands, i'm tired of them lol. only for light cars tho, for trucks, stick with professional shop with professional lift. |

My opinion is: nice idea, but it'll never fly. The people who need it aren't going to buy it, and the people who are safety-conscious enough to buy it don't really need it.
