Jeez that's alot of plugs and bolts to remove just to replace a battery...

and $300 for a new one?!

FYI: Don't store batteries on concrete floors, best to keep them at least a inch off the floor or on a shelf.

I can change two 28 volt batteries in a 757-200 quicker than it would take in my car...
Open access hatch, disconnect temp sensor cannon plugs (one each battery) cut copper safety wire off knob, turn em halfway and off they come, unscrew the two bottom retainers knob and they slide out.

Did you get this battery from a local BMW dealer? I noticed "EXIDE" logo on the top of the battery (new battery), wondering if I can find it Exide battery at AutoZone or PepBoys?

I swapped out my battery on my own using an Interstate battery. I've heard rumors that you have to register/reset (aka have the stealership rape you) but its BS. You can use any battery as long as it has the same spec's as the mfg battery (your local autoparts store or even Walmart can look it up for you). Many other have successfully done this on their own too! Been over 6 months for me with no issues.

this is sounding like somewhat of a "noob" question... but is it really necessary to register the battery?? from what i've been reading on the forum, so issues might arise if you don't register the battery? also, what if i decide to go with another brand besides bmw, will I need to register it?

WARNING

The negative post should always be disconnected first (stops tools shorting between terminal and body when undoing the positive terminal)

While I see that this is an ancient thread... I cannot help myself....

If you pay $300.00 for a replacement battery... then perhaps there needs to be a new DIY on "how to buy a battery."

Buy one for less - let us know where... Here is my experience

In looking for one for my E60, I tried the typical autozone/advance auto parts...
Not the same battery, CCA was same but physical size and weight and capacity was not. Venting was also a little different. I ended up with dealer battery for ~250 - is that a steal?

Got to: http://www.getbmwparts.com/

I priced out a battery for a 2011 335i and it came to $145 (vs. $200 MSRP). It is an EXIDE brand. For that price I would not bother taking a chance at Sears, AutoZone, etc.

Now the question is what will a dealer charge to register the battery once it is installed. That's where the hosing takes place.

Interstate battery here, they looked up the part and had a choice of a similar capacity AGM which is what I wanted, they are military grade indestructible batteries with a 7 year warranty and much lighter than the lead acid one it replaced. It cost about the same as the dealership was charging for a lead acid exide.

Update: I have received a Bavarian technic tool and have registered the new battery

Any idea what the thread on the Negative battery cable is for? Mine seems to have fallen off. It does not seem to be conductive. It sorta fell off while I was removing/reattaching the negative cable. Thanks, mikey!

That wire is used during transport of new car - to be ignored & it doesn't connect to anything...

Untrue

This was the case waaaaaayyyyyy back when when batteries where constructed of different materials - no longer the case...
