Better to get some money from a 'legal' copy than try to fight them for illegal ones they steal and clone badly.

There's so much corporate espionage going on originating from there, it's sick. Government sponsored and corporate initiated.

As I said in my previous post, there are different ways to make money. BMW chose to make more money by selling out.

Following your way of thinking, BMW should start selling a cheap model in India to compete with the Tata Nano... there's money to be made there too!

Actually it's a good idea.
Give them the old platforms (ex. E46 chassis) and export them to the USA!

The only way foreign manufacturers can build cars in China is to partner with a Chinese automaker to build their cars. BMW partners with Brilliance (hence the BMW logo on Brilliance's website).

Mercedes partners with Beijing Automotive. Audi partners with FAW.

I think it's move similar to what Audi is doing. Chinese made Audis are made and sold solely in China. But they only get A4's or something like that. the higher series and more luxurious top of the line cannot be bought in China. At least not yet. Can't blame BMW for wanting to get some piece of the pie.

Why would this be a bad idea for BMW.

They can rack up many sales in China and make good profits.

There will be a badly made piece of junk but with a huge BMW logo on it, or same label saying its a BMW technology.

Exactly!

People are getting it totally wrong, whats the issue with selling old technologies instead of dumping them?

Its not like BMW is transfering their current vehicle production to China.

And the more money they make with that, the more they can spend on developing future genuine BMW's.

How is that bad?

Hell no, the only real e46s come from Germany.

If it helps with company expansion and sustainability then a good idea. As long as what is made in china, stays in china.

Calm down people this is a joint venture for the Chinese market. These cars will never make it here. If you want growth you need to build and sell in China, let them go ahead with this and we will continue to have real BMW's in the rest of the world.

The fact that the X3, X5 and Z4 are made in the USA, does it tarnish BMW?

Your future Audi's (well at least the Q Series will come from Mexico).

This is the nature of the global auto industry.

I don't think you're getting the reason for most people's consternation.

Finally, a logical response to this topic.

What then is the reason for most people's "consternation"?

Don't be surprised that the next step would be to have chinese manufactured components (by "The Promise") make their way throughout the BMW family.
BMW is a company, they want to make money plain and simple. Would you want to run a business and purposefully turn down financial gain?
I agree with you. China is a big market and at a business standpoint it would be stupid of BMW not to.
