Can iDrive firmware/software be upgraded?

I have an early build 2010 E93. All newer models can click an option for audio when pairing Bluetooth devices essentially giving the owner the ability to stream Internet radio via Bluetooth. Unfortunately I can't because the audio option doesn't exist - only calls only.

It seems to me that this can be fixed via a software upgrade - hence my original question ...

Of course iDrive software can be updated, but not sure it will fix your problem. I believe you have to have internet activated on your car (+ device which supports BT tethering) to work.

You need to retrofit the Combox to get the Bluetooth audio. The software update is also required but without the hardware changes it will give you nothing.

Feel free to send us an email with your VIN if you are interested in this retrofit.

I ordered a media combox and I'm also interested in how I can update my current iDrive and get everything setup.

I will be searching the forums tonight to get more info on how the combox can be installed. lots of challenges coming ahead

Can the I drive software on a 06/2008 production 335 be upgraded or are 2008 models just too old?

The Combox retrofit is only available for 2009-on iDrive, not for the 2008.

If you have a 2008 Navi and Bluetooth, you need a new navi and combox

If you have a 2009 navi and bluetooth, you just need the new combox however I believe you need to have your current navi updated in order to accept the new combox.

Interestingly I was just looking into this today. I have an 07 which has the old CCC navigation system, I would need to spend over $2000 just to upgrade to the new CIC and combox, and that's just parts.

If you're really only interested in streaming music from your phone to car stereo so you can cut the cord, then a bluetooth adapter like this one that plugs into your existing AUX IN should work.

http://www.amazon.com/Miccus-BluBrid.../dp/B0038MA11U

Now the CIC nav with combox does way more, but if you're interested in just streaming music to your stereo without a cord, this may be your ticket. And the one above is also powered by USB, so if you have the USB input in the console, you can just plug it in and have it charged at all times.

I'll probably get this very shortly (next couple weeks after some more research) and post a review.

I would recommend you go with a BT A2DP receiver without a built in battery. Something like this : http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-Techno...2551424&sr=1-3

The reason : When you switch off your car, the streaming automatically stops when BT is disconnected. With inbuilt battery ones, they will keep playing as long as you are in range or you manually switch it off. BT is a battery hog, and could drain your phone unnecessarily.
Of course, you will not be able to use it outside the car.
I like it not worrying about switching off my music

Did you actually read the OP's question in detail or simply you like to post misinformation?

As a precautionary safety measure I would recommend not posting your VIN in a public forum. It's better if you private message this kind of information.

I know this is an old thread but has anyone figured out how to add the a2dp to cars that already have bluetooth for phones?

I have a 5/2010 build 2011 335i with the combox in the trunk...

I understand late 2010 build cars have the "Software Update" under the settings in iDrive.

Question is, Can BMW upgrade the firmware on my combox so I could have those features too? or does the combox have to replaced with a newer unit??

Are you talking about BMW Apps? You can use the combox you have, but you need to retrofit it into the vehicle along with purchasing an enabling code.
