Removing Steering Wheel Button Connector from Clockspring

I've been following some guides on removing the steering wheel buttons and eventually was able to do it. One guide said to stick a screwdriver into the top of the small hole, push down on the small button and lever it out. Another guide said to pull gently with pliers and it will come out.

I eventually did get the connector released by pulling, but it felt like it wasn't the correct way to remove them as there was a fair amount of resistance. I was worried I might damage the clock spring.

How have you all removed the button connector from the clock spring?
