Can anyone tell me if this clock spring is ok and the red plastic is made to be broken? I got my wheel and clock spring came with it today and was wondering if it was broken during transport and is meant to be broken.

thanks.

The red tab is to keep the spring in place during transport - it will need to be broken off.

Just ordered the M-Tech wheel from Qalbeli! I figure it's good use of Christmas money Anyway, I looked at my wheel, and the little airbag release holes are covered. I'm sure I can poke right through it covering, but is there any trick to doing that so it doesn't look bad if I ever want to put it back on? How do they put the wheel on at the factory with the hole covered anyway?

The holes should have some tiny slits over them. Just stick a small screwdriver in there and you'll see the slits.

Besides, what do you care what the back of the steering wheel looks like?

Once you remove the screwdriver, the little slits will close up again. You won't be able to tell that there was ever anything in there. Even if you were to look behind the wheel!

holy shit, I just read all 28 pages and finally got the airbag to pop out on the new wheel (company I bought it from attached the airbag to the new wheel for some reason).

anyway, anybody who still looks at this thread come from a NON zsp wheel? Any tips or tricks for the swap? I'm going to assume that its kinda the same thing as finding the clips inside the bag to pop the airbag off on the stock wheel???

thanks for the help in advance.

forget it... installed it in about an hour... those airbag clips on the non zsp wheel are even harder than on the msport one.

anyway, all is good and I LOVE the way it looks. Best mod on my car so far HANDS DOWN!

do you have an XI? For some reason it happens on XI models. To get rid of all the lights, start your engine and turn your wheel all the way to the left and then to the right or vice versa....

try unconnecting the battery again, then go back and make sure all the switches are on tight. reconnect and then take a quick trip around the block and confirm that all your multifunction buttons and the horn work. mine gave me the light too but after I drove it down the street it went off immediately

Alright thanks for the advice I'm going to try that right now but I'm kinda doubting it will work because I already drove around for a bit with the light on. If anyone else has any more advice please let me know. It will be highly appreciated.

Thanks, you were right.

I just put the wheel on today and love it! This is an excellent DIY. Thanks so much! The only things that gave my trouble were getting the plugs off the paddles, and getting the new wheel tightened tight enough. With the battery disconnected, the wheel will turn while tightening it. I usd the hold with your legs while tightening trick. I suggest having a helper to hold while you tighten.

So a funny thing has been occuring recently. I installed the m-tech steering wheel on my 335xi coupe about 6 months ago and until recently have been loving it with no problems.

However, a funny thing has started occuring about a week ago. My horn would go off randomly when I am driving. It seems to be completely random, every 5 minutes or so, during a mild or hard turn of the steering wheel my horn would beep briefly... roughly about 1 beep every say 20-30 turns our so.

The beep frequency has been increasing as time went on and today I took the airbag/horn activation steering wheel center out, checked to make sure all the connections are on tightly, and then reinstalled the unit. However, the horn has still been randomly beeping.

Anybody else that installed the mtech steering wheel encountered this problem before? Since I have a aftermarket (abet oem BMW part) steering wheel installed I am worried about complications with the dealership warranty department but as you can imagine, this is a highly fustrating problem I want to get resolved asap.

sorry dude that sucks but you have to see the comical value in it.

I'd shit myself if I was driving and my horn went off randomly

I had the same exact problem when I first installed my tri-stitched steering wheel. Whenever I would turn the steering wheel it would just keep honking. I opened up the steering wheel again and made sure everything was tight and closed it up again and the random horn sound went away.

The contacts must somehow be closing intermittently under certain steering wheel positions, which suggests the switch contact alignment is off. I remember looking at the horn contacts when I installed my M3 wheel and realizing what a simple setup it is. Unfortunately, you can't see them when the airbag assembly is in place. If you can inspect the contacts and visualize their alignment with the airbag back in place, you can hopefully determine where the problem is located. The horn contacts must have been realigned (bent) during the airbag removal or replacement process. Also compare sides to see if they look the same.
