I was very bad today. VERY, VERY BAAAAAAADDDDD!!!!
Sorry to leave it as a cliffhanger, but I've got to get dinner served and then off to the usual Friday night activities (shooting at Wade's), so I won't update this until after midnight, or maybe tomorrow afternoon...... VERY BAD! Did I mention that yet? Well, not as bad as I could have been I suppose......

Rut-Roh - me thinks he either got the D300 or D700. If he did, then he's straight up BALLA status and probably needs to crash at someone's house tonite since his wife might kick him out! lol

I know Adorama had a better price, but I did spend about 1 hour with the Camera's West sales guy talking about different things. I like to support local shops too. While I work for a big corporation, I also have my own small business. Sometimes it is hard to see customers buy off the internet just to save $10. Not that Camera's West is a "small guy" shop, I know they are owned by Ritz, but still. If they go, then it gets hard to go "hands on" with something before you buy it on the internet. Hell, just look at Circuit City. Thousands of people laid off and all their stores closed. Did people buying from the internet instead of Circuit City kill them? Not entirely, I don't think. But it might have been the difference of going out of business entirely vs. closing a few stores. Who knows. In any case, support your local businesses if you can, even if it means a small price premium. Anyway, I figure I paid about $280 more than buying from Adorama (small price difference plus the damn sales tax.) But I also got the following "value" from buying local: Free Epsom photo printer ($100) - Wanted a non-HP printer anyway and I was about to buy one from Staples. $100 credit for imaging at Camera's West (negotiated using Adorama as a lever.) Vouchers "worth" $270 for Camera's West training classes. I really put the value between $50 and $75, as that is the most I would pay for these type of classes. But still, I could use some refresher courses. My sales guy is also the instructor for these classes. Anyway, I figure I received an incremental value buying locally that was equal to the savings if bought from Adorama. If someone didn't want those things, then the deal wouldn't be as good for them. The real big plus is I have the camera RFN, instead of waiting 7 to 10 business days. Nikon is putting on a class for D90 owner's next Thursday for $25 down in Tukwila. Since the menu interface is basically the same on the D300, I'm going to sign up for it. Ok, I think I'm pretty close to done with the I guess we should ask if Twitchy has actually sold this camera yet! Might be time to abandon this thread and start a fresh for sale post without all these assholes crapping in the thread! (I'm the biggest crapper by the way....)

Dam GiNA.. D300 is very very nice and it sounds like you got some good deals from CameraWest to make up for the price diff online. I went to the CameraWest store in bellevue (20th st.) and found the people there to be very friendly but the prices were somewhat high.

Yeah I've noticed that store on Northup Way. Never wanted to go in but now I'm considering it. What's their price on the 18-200mm?
And my D60 is still up - tons of offers - all too low. |

I bought mine through Adorama back in the day for like $650 and that was with a coupon code no less. Not sure what CameraWest charges. You could probably get a refurb or used one from Ebay prolly in the $500s

Sucks that my local Circuit City doesn't sell much in terms of camera lens. Although they did have an 18-200mm on display next to a D300 - all out of box, open. I asked the guy if they were selling them separately and he said no
Would've been a great deal now that all camera stuff is 20% off. I should have asked about the SB-600s... |

No that has been prolly the best investment - what the SB-600 has done to my indoor and low light pics has been well worth the $$.. I couldn't see spending for the upgrade but I do notice that Flash to Flash performance could be somewhat better if you have lots of successive shots to take. But nothing terrible - just not worth the $500 bones of the SB-900.

Just buying the 18-200 alone would be $750, and the D300 would have been $1650, but if you bought them together, they took $300 off the 18-200. So it worked out to $2,100 for the body and lens. Adorama was $2030 shipped (7-10 days according to their website.) I've been so busy today that I've barely had time to crack the manual or start shooting. I need to get cracking!

Make sure you bring that beast to the next meet! You already get a tripod? cuz you know - you have to have a tripod. And a camera bag right? cuz you know, how you gonna lug all the gear around??
Oh and an extended battery grip.. cuz well they're cool and you can take pics for like a week before needing to recharge the batteries. Lol -photography is like modding BMW's - the shit makes you go broke. |

As for a tripod, I've got a Bogen/Manfrotto 3021 that I've had for 15+ years with a 3030 head (pan/tilt/pivot QD.) It isn't as "high speed low drag" as some of the really cool heads, but it works. Quote:

Holy Thread JACK!! Sorry Twitchy..
As for a bag.. man I loves me some Lowepro Rover AW II. It packs 2 lens, fits the D80 with Grip and Lens attached - has room for widgets/gadgets and the Coup'de Grace - has a slide slot for my Dell XPS M1330 lappy. I'm not gonna lie and tell you it is light as heck, but it's not as bad as carrying a 4ft midget on your shoulders. I usually use that when I travel or go on road trips but not for hiking - I need a gay fanny pack or camera holster for that. |

Lowepro is the way to go! I got myself a Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW at Costco for $35 after rebate. It works like the Lowepro Flipside where you can swing the bag around to the front and change lenses on the go, provided that you organize the Slingshot's sections in an awkward manner. But it works As in sell the package excluding a lens and some stuff? I'm willing to, but I'm not willing to sell lenses separately just yet. That has to be be done AFTER I sell the D60 package. |

I use the Lowepro camera strap. I think they only make one. It works just fine with my D60 but I can't tell you how it is on the D300. The Lowepro one has plastic buckles which I'm somewhat worried about attaching to the heavier camera. I've tugged pretty hard on them a couple of times and they seem ok.

Cool. I'm looking at the Op/Tech ones, they look nice. As for plastic "fastex" type buckles, I don't worry about the quality ones. I hang things much heavier (15 lbs of gear worth about $7,000) off of them all the time with no failures. Hmmmm, that gives me an idea. My buddy does custom "tactical" products for the military and such. I bet he could make me a pretty stout and comfortable strap. Probably cost more than $20 though....
