Got a pleasant surprise when bringing my car in for warranty work

I have a CPO 335i. When I bought the car I specifically rejected the extended maintenance and tire coverage.

Brought my car in for wastegate rattle and a leaking fuel injector the other day. The brake wear indicator light was on, and I told the service advisor not to worry about it because I would be doing it myself and didn't want to get charged an arm and a leg by the dealership.

Service advisor goes "why don't you want it done, you have maintenance until April of 2015?"

I guess the idiots at the dealership I bought the car from fat fingered a computer entry and gave it to me on accident. Only shitty thing is I got my oil changed only 1,000 miles before I found this out, but I'm not gonna complain about free maintenance.

My spark plugs were changed at 50k, I'm at 70k now and the service advisor wouldn't change my plugs. When is the next service interval for plugs?

Plugs are about every 30kmiles or so I believe. And it's only 60$.

45k miles is the current recommended interval.

I have heard some horror stories about breaking plugs and I'd rather have BMW do it if possible. Looks like 30-45k miles is too much, especially since I'm running a tune. I'll just have to bite the bullet and do it myself I guess.

those who do the plugs use torque wrenches that usually over torque. I always make them snug and a quarter turn for good measure.

I'd do the plugs myself but I need to get the walnut blasting done in the next 6,000 miles so I figure I'll just have them done at the same time and not stress over it.

Can you back this up?

I used my torque wrench and was worried it wasn't tight enough and then gave it a 1/4 turn. It would have to be SUPER out of whack to seriously over tighten...

Any mechanic can you tell you they barely if ever use torque wrenches on spark plugs. The torque wrench need to be recalibrated as well periodically.
I've done many spark plugs on my e36 and I can do it in literally 15 minutes. The car even comes with a spark plug tool lol

Once it's snug just turn a quarter more and your done.

If you don't have any issues don't go looking for any! You'll know if it's too lose itll misfire and etc and if its too tight and breaks it'll cause engine damage possibly.

This statement is ridiculous. You don't trust torque wrenches, so you eyeball a quarter turn extra.

I prefer a torque wrench, and remember, no anti seize. btw my wife's uncle bought a $12 torque wrench from HFT and had it calibrated. It was accurate. Just won't last as long as my snap on.

I was replying to this statement

I was merely saying that the stories I've heard and read on the forum was due to a bad torque wrench! I would not want to strip my head so I just do it the old fashion way.
No I use torque wrenches just not on my spark plugs. It doesn't even need that much torque why bother.

Torque wrenches, if handled properly, will stay within spec for a LONG time.

How do you break a plug with a torque wrench exactly?

I did a carbon cleaning at 60k miles. To be honest the buildup wasn't THAT bad and I didn't notice any difference in the car afterwards.

Gotta keep your gaps in spec when you have a turbo to make sure you get good ignition. All plugs wear down over time and make a bigger gap, but with a turbo that can be a pain in the ass since you are already requiring a stronger spark in the first place.

As for some more good news, BMW is replacing my injectors and my turbos (wastegate rattle) under warranty

They even told me they are going to replace my passenger headlight because it had a "short". I didn't even notice anything was wrong with it.
