which crossover SUV to get

considering a second vehicle for weekend warriors and snowboarding trips.

I am looking at a under $30K budget out the door. Don't care about performance so 4cyl for all, but must have 4WD or AWD for snow and light off-road capability for off route camping. Exterior styling and interior comfort is important also. Looking at base 4WD models with minimum options for all the options below. I don't tow shit. and even if I do, it won't be more than 1500 lbs for a trailer and 2 bikes or a jet ski in the future.

Contenders... all 2010

Toyota Rav4

Honda CRV

Hyundai Santa Fe

Mitsubishi Outlander

VW Tiguan

Chevy Equinox

As of now,
I am really leaning toward the Outlander. Even tho it doesn't rate that good in reviews. But mostly its because of the horrible 3rd row seat and weak engine. Both of which I don't really care. It looks nice, very evo-fied, which I dig. Cheapo interior according to reviews, but REALLY AWESOME warranty. It's also very rare on the road, makes me feel different.

The Rav4 and CRV are nice and always a safe bet, but it just seems so blend and common.

For the same price I can get the Santa Fe. Advantage is its bigger and has awesome warranty period. Downside is, its a Hyundai. I just can't see myself in a Korean car. and the Sata Fe base model doesn't look as nice as the top end model.

The Tiguan is nice, and its German which is good and bad. but I think its a bit too small compared to the rest. I haven't really looked at the specs too closely, but in real life, it looks a tad bit smaller for my taste. Also its expansive...relatively, which means no options at all.

Equinox, I never thought that I would 1 day consider American in my car choice, but I gotta say GM is stepping up. MPG is off the chart on the equinox and I'm whatevers on the typical GM bulky styling, don't love it , don't hate it. Its size is on the big side, which is good. Also 100K miles power-train warranty is not half-bad. Downside, a bit more expansive than Asian choices, and quality uncertain since it is American.

Forester is not on the list is because I think its really ugly. I tried to like it, because it's cheap and got awesome Subaru AWD system but I just can't. It looks like a dirty asshole.

Clearly I'd say stay away from the Toyota. Agree with you about the Subie. I just saw the Hyundais at the auto show and I was surprised at how good they really are. And for the money it's hard to beat.

The idiocy that exists because of media hype is astounding!

There have been much more significant recalls than what has occurred with Toyota....although that seems to have been missed in NA...including the German manufacturers.

Convenient that the American car companies are getting killed by Toyota....and then the American government buys the said companies....then Toyota is the evil empire....LMAO!

And before the fanbois and haters get all bent out of shape.....I own 2 Germans AFTER my "Toyota" that you'll all flame....haha!

The RAV4 is a good choice but it's a little feminine IMO. The Honda CR-V is a pretty good choice as well. I think the Equinox looks good and should be a nice car but I don't know much about it. Have you considered a used Acura RDX or maybe a Lexus RX350? What a Nissan Moreno or Infiniti FX?

I drove a KIA Sorento and it was pretty damn good. V6 4x4 starts at 29K. Doesn't look that bad either.

Equinox/Terrain. The interior of the Equinox/Terrain is IMHO class leading. You also can't beat that 32 MPG HWY rating.

because I can't get the base model in AWD, I have to go for the turbo model and its expensive.

You can get a used RDX for pretty cheap these days. One of my friends got one and I like it a whole lot more than another friend's CR-V. It's actually quite upscale (not compared to an MDX, but relative to the ones on this list)

Wife has the Santa Fe CD RX7 and for the money it's very good value. 7 seats torquey engine, never let us down in the thick snow.

Why not just pick up a used Cherokee (classic, NOT Grand Cherokee)? You can get a 2001 with <100k for less than $5K and you won't have to worry about monthly payments, it's inexpensive to fix, and you won't be upset if someone scratches it. No point in blowing $30k on a weekend beater.

I'd agree on this. The money you save up front can be used for fuel, and save for repairs if they become necessary. It will ALWAYS cost less, even with repairs, to buy a used car for a weekend beater/carryall. Insurance will be less, you will lose less on resale later (think about it, if you buy for $5k, you might sell 3 years later for $3k or 5 years later for $2k, but a $30k rig will be worth $15-20k in 2-3 years. Why throw $10-15k away for nothing?)

makes sense on the old beater. Any other choice under 5K? I really hate the cherokee look and not sure about Jeep reliability.
