This is my first proper post after saying hello in the newbie section...

Was called by the dealer today to say that the car will be built in week 51 and a chassis number has been allocated. This is a baby step forward but I'm starting to get a bit excited (and I'm a boring old fart normally). My kids have grown up and left and this is my first coupe following a series of more sedate family saloons (including 2 x 5 series and an E class)

Ruby Black with red leather

Just hope it doesn't come in a spell of bad weather and snow - I want nice dry roads to drive on please!!!

I used to work in sales for a BMW/MINI Dealer, once a number is allocated then your car is "locked" into build so you can't change spec.

I was tempted... but I wanted a coupe (kids grown up so first time I can get away with something a bit sporty)

Dealer reckoned that the F32 (prob 4 series coupe) was at least a year away - ie late 2013.

got 15%-16% discount on list on the car though so I was fairly pleased and it is a great looking car I think.

I had a couple of 5s (company cars) when the family was younger so I know the BMW brand well but I've never had a 3

A glorious box... so smooth when pootiling/cruising and then savage with the click of the sports button!

Just a shame you have to run the engine in before you can fully test this

OK - dealer says the car's now built - not too long to wait.

What's the run-in protocol? I've assumed don't exceed 4K revs for about 1000 miles and vary the engine speed... does that cover it or do I need to do more?

That'll be discussed in the handover process. But whatever figure is mentioned it will seem like an eternity!

You don't need to run in a modern car the engine will have done thousands of miles on a test bench before being put in the car!

ps. at the moment Broadspeed getting only about 12% off list so it sounds like you got a very strong deal

Mad as I was getting well over 20% discount offered about a year ago but that was with a massive dealer contribution, which doesn't seem to be around now.

I guess they're saving the last savings for when F32 has been announced, last 6 months kind of thing.

Every engine BMW manufacturers is connected to a test bench, filled with oil and fluids, special wiring looms for each engine connected, exhausts connected to channel and filter the gases outside, cold air fans activated then run up to operating temperature and modulated for "thousands of miles", monitored, left to cool down, drained of cooling and then sent to the production line. A vast area of test benches filled with workers carry out this testing. It's an amazing setup.

As someone who has actually rebuilt quite a few engines, use common sense when running in your engine. Modern tolerances and oils are much better than before but doing a sensible run in period is still very much beneficial. Not only for your engine.

Rev limit is not the main restriction. For the first few runs let your engine reach normal operating temperatures (when your oil temp has reached normal temps). Deep heat soak. Drive normally at varying speeds/loads.

Have spoken to dealer today and I can have the car on Saturday morning!!!

Insurance arranged, they're taxing it and doing the PDI tomorrow (thurs) and a valet on Friday and then it's mine.

Seems to have been a much longer wait than for previous BMWs - still half the fun is the anticipation I suppose...

Just hope it's not completely p***ing down all day! Will post a pic when I can...

Car finally arrived! Took delivery yesterday morning - resisted the temptation to "launch" off the forecourt! The user manual says that launch control is not available during the running in period - I wonder if that means somehow restricted or just not advised.

The dealer (and user manual) says to keep it under 4K revs and 100mph for the first 1200 miles. I've only forgotten once so far!

With the weather as it is the car was filthy within 10 minutes of leaving the dealer so when I get a fine day I'll clean it and post a pic or two.

Very happy with the car though - top build quality and handles beautifully.

4 months and 7000 miles with my 335i and it still manages to put a grin on my face!

exactly my reaction - big grin. Still covered in dirt so I haven't photographed it yet - maybe tomorrow...

Drove up to Leeds from London on Monday and back Wed. to give it a blast - haven't enjoyed a drive that much in ages. Even keeping below 4K revs I left a few tailgaters wondering where I'd gone when I squeezed the pedal!

Haven't really had any settled weather since I picked up the car but finally took some pics... Have now gone past running-in mileage and got the chance to press the loud pedal properly. Blimey - this car shifts.
