Hi,

I'm looking to step up my coding/programming a bit. And am now using ISTA/P.

Im looking for a reliable / cheap power supply (BSU) for programming. Ive read through the recommended list of PSU's and almost fell off my chair with the prices!

Having searched I've seen the following are recommended by DIYer's:

Schumacher INC-700A - $427
Snap On EEBC 500 -$550 (approx)

Im looking for something even cheaper! So, anyone got any recommendations for a cheap 13.8v 50/60/70/80amp PSU?

Would this do it? For $129 it looks a bargin!

Are you doing coding (ncsexpert) or programming (winkfpt)

Neither. Programming with ISTA/P - i.e. full up upgrades. I'm trying to move away from inpa, ncsexpert and winkfp. Sometime you've just got to move forward.

BMW recommend 70amp for e90. For the new generations F series they go for 80!

I did a complete update a while back with SSS Progman. It took all night and my 50 amp Astron kept up (pegged the meter when I first hooked it up but settled down to about 30-40 amps) so you should be good with 50 amp or better. If you can, go with the recommended 70-80 amp though; Astrons are pretty much bullet-proof and could handle being pegged at 50 for a few minutes until it settled down. I don't know about some of the cheap switching PS's.

Nice, thanks for the info. What spec is your car? I believe the load will greatly depend on what modules you have. If yours is top spec with idrive etc etc that astron sound great. How much did you he it for?

I have almost all the options available on the 2006 on mine so I have a lot of modules. I've also added a sat radio and alarm for 3 more modules.

I'm not sure where I got my 50 amp Astron actually. I have about a half-dozen various Astron power supplies and another half-dozen other brands. I'm an Amateur Radio operator and I've picked most of them up at ham-fests.

Hi Sensible, Amazon has the Schumacher INC-700A for $353.99 (currently) with free shipping. Still not exactly "cheap" but definitely the cheapest I've seen. I haven't bought it yet, myself, but have been seriously considering. Here is the link:

Yeah the Schumacher is pretty much best for diyer's. Still not that cheap but well worth it for peace of mind.

Good price at the moment, I got it for slightly more a month or two ago.

I've been asking Schumacher and Amazon about why the INC-700A unit cannot be shipped out of the USA, and no one has been (able to) respond for some reason. I have a feeling that it has to do with the the 20 Amp rated power cord with the flat conductors positioned at a right angle.

Questions:
1. Which retailer supplied yours?
2. Was the cord type the same as in the attached picture(from manual), and you are using an adapter between the cord and the wall socket?
3. Or is the cord you received different?

I got mine from eBay, it was used but supplied with a UK 3pin adapter. I think EU 2pin adapter will also be fine.
