Is this a good deal?

Hi guys,
I have a friend px his mini for a 1er

The px on the mini is £3500 so I'm tempted to buy it for the mrs.

It's a cooper with chilli pack 06 plate 71,000 on the clock. Cheapest on auto trader is £4850 same age/milage.

My concern really is that moons ago I bought an ex learner mini and it needed a new gearbox at 90,000 and had been through two clutches (I think).

Any pearls of wisdom, most welcome

Cheers all

You could buy and sell for a profit.

I guess it's a facelift model? In which case it's a decent deal. Whether it'll be reliable or not is impossible to know. My gf's 2006 cooper has been great (on 45,000 miles though).

My only knowledge about minis is that passed on by my mechanic/motor trade friend. He says they are shite because they are full of Peugeot parts. He does however like the fact that they always sell quickly for a profit as girls can't get enough of them.

Take what you will from that. He claims every manufacturer is shite apart from Merc. I generally ignore his advice.

THe very early batch of Minis had weak gearboxes but think that was resolved around 2003. Doesn't mean you couldn't be unlucky I guess but sounds like its worth a punt to me.

Thanks guys,
Bit more info, its a face lifted model, I believe this model shared parts with Chrysler, Peugeot parts are with the current mini.

I think I will take a closer look,

I briefly owned an 06 Cooper which suffered from idle gearbox chatter - basically little moans and groans from the gearbox and subsequently had the gearbox changed - which made little difference

Good fun car for the cash - go for it!
