It's all happening pretty fast, I think you would need to log the operation to catch the change.

I thought this system had at least two speeds in operation. Like a CNC machine it starts to slow down when it's near the end stops. I thought I saw different speeds for the learning process as well.

You are correct both the MSV70 and MSV80 use the same Valvetronic motor, thanks REALOEM.

16.7mm/s seems to be the main component in the VVT adjustment (it compares the actual position to the target, then goes to an adjustment routine which references that constant, plus a couple min/max response time constants).

Where it gets more complicated is a calculation of the valvetronic motor torque which I don't really follow, but there's a 3rd time constant that is calculated based on the torque requirements of the valvetronic motor. I suspect that is mainly where the adjustment for the ends of travel is made.

yeah, it would have to be logged. I couldn't tell any difference so I changed it back to stock.

BTW,
Do you see a way to defeat the 172.5 degree limit on the eccentric cam? I've noticed that raising the valve lift past 9.8mm does rotate the cam past 172.5 but not much. I was thinking about trying the 11MM setting and see if that brings the cam closet to 175 degrees but have not had the time to try. Have you found a more elegant solution?

I haven't looked at it much - that part of the code is a bit harder to follow as I don't have a 100% complete reference (MSS70 has most of the same code some of it is missing or different).

I have been running mine at 11mm due to the same thing you said about it making a small difference. I haven't logged the actual position to confirm, however.

I'll test this and make a few logs. I'm hoping my new software will make it easy to test and log new ideas without swapping DME's or pulling wires through the car. Time to get back to tuning.

try setting the vvt adjustment speed to 20mm/s and see if that makes a difference. It won't cause any errors, i drove for thousands of miles like that.

OK, not really afraid of errors, Got tons of them messing with the Valvetronic end stops last year. Just keep a Spare DME in the trunk. Sort of like a spare tire that I don't have. No space in the Z4 trunk.

Has anyone else come across an issue like this? I thought it could have been a clogged converter or muffler. Is it in the tune?

I believe I've re-found the maps related to the O2 sensor delay - there's four, 2 sets for each bank (plus two more to account for sensor age, but they aren't important to this discussion). one is a time vs load & RPM, the other is a weighting factor vs load & RPM.

They definitely change between the 3.0si and the 330i - and we know the 3.0si makes a bit more power primarily due to different exhaust. Whether any tuners have tried to adjust them, I don't know. It looks like the O2 sensors are further away on the 3.0si, as both the time and weighting factors are increased.

The N52 already has widebands. There must be a product that can plug into the OBD port and give you a display? maybe an app for a phone or tablet?

I wouldn't mess with the stock O2 sensors otherwise. you could add bungs or install aftermarket sensors in the post-cat location.

I know the data is available on the Bus, I pull up the wideband data using Test-O

yeah, it's there, there must be something that can tap into it rather than adding a second pair of sensors. I'd bet the stock ones are more reliable than most aftermarket sensors anyway.

BTW, here's those time lag maps for the Lambda sensor adaptation routines. See how the 3.0si time delay is higher - presumably because the O2 sensors are further away from the exhaust valves. I don't really understand how the weight factor works exactly but that is different as well on the 3.0si. The only one that stays the same is the sensor aging.

330i:

3.0si:

Weight Factor (330i):

Also notice that the bank 2 lag is higher than bank one, presumably due to different lengths in the exhaust path.

Perhaps it's possible to extrapolate the required changes for headers by comparing the 3.0si and 330i settings. An extra complication is presumably that the exhaust velocity is higher on headers (that's how they make more power), so even if the sensors are further away, the time delay could in fact be shorter in some portions of the map, and longer in others.

Awesome information.

For the record the Z4 3.0 I has the same exhaust system as the Z4 3.0SI. At least with the E85 platform.

No i would rather keep them as they do make adjustments,I like the other ideas but I hqvent seen anyone pull logs on a n52.

Look at my post, it's an N52 with Lamda output for bank one and two. called, STAT_LAMBDA_ISTWERT_GRUPPE1_WERT AND STAT_LAMBDA_ISTWERT_GRUPPE2_WERT

I have many of these. All with a data frame rate of about 120 milliseconds. Just need your Dcan cable and Test-O

I can log about 24 variables at one time.

Shop told me they couldn't do it and that I'd have to schedule another appointment to do another dyno, and pay again
