Sports Package = Multiple Cracked OEM Wheels?

My 545i with sports package has had 2 cracked rims in the past 2 months. My wheels keep getting hair line fractures on the inside edge that span maybe 1 inch…jus enough for air to slowly leak out. Fortunately I know of a place that repairs cracked rims for $100 bucks. Can you guys tell me if I’m just a bad/rough driver or are these wheels just weak and BMW should use stronger materials because you have had the same issue?

I drive on some bad roads in PA, NJ, and NYC. I haven't had any problems yet so far with OEM rims but I know people have bent numerous aftermarket rims on these bad roads. I thought roads other than the Midwest and Northeast are supposed to be pretty good?

How would air leak out of the tires if the wheels have hairline fractures? Or are you talking about the tires cracking?

Those OEM wheels are the strongest cast wheels you can buy. My 19" style230 have hit multiple craters so far, and it is still in top condition (knock on wood).

You live in Texas, what the hell? The roads there are smooth like glass.

where are you driving? most people who claim to live in Houston live in the burbs and the roads out there are smooth (from what I hear). I live in the loop with the sport package and I have not had any problems.

Try bf.c

I know my E36 wheels were made of hardened butter, so they bent easily but never cracked. Don't know what the case was for the 5er. But you'll probably have a difficult time getting this answered on e90post.

Best of luck.

Are your wheels 19"? There are a lot of problems with Style 225 and 230 wheels in the U.K. and it is beginning to look like 19" wheels with 30 or 35 profile tyres AND being run-flats, is a deadly combination in areas where the roads are not that good.

Basically, because of the low profiles and the stiffness of the run flat sidewalls, the tyres cushion nothing and transmit sudden loads straight onto the road wheels.

There's a big sticky thread on the U.K. section "Taking BMW legal" which has a lot of people with cracked 19" rims. Not 17", not 18" and not M3 or Alpina (which don't have run-flats), just 19" wheels with run-flats.

Sadly, the U.K. isn't full of smooth roads (outside of the motorways).

No its definately houston. the freeways r descent here but out streets have ditches not fkn potholes. sometime i feel like my rims are about to break. i have less than 15k on my car and had to replace 2 tires due to bubbles caused from potholes. sucks bad.

Houston has some nice roads, but there are definetly areas with pot holes waiting to crush ur rims...

No I don't have 19's...Jus 18s. I know it's a 3 series forum, but I just like to hear ur opinions because they are so valuable to me (a tear fell).

dunno, my 197's are perfectly fine after a year of "spirited" driving and some pot holes that looked like they could swallow my car. they did get some curb rush, due to "spirited" parking jobs brought you buy yours truly

If the wheel cracked when you hit a pothole, the wheel is probably defective. They should bend, not crack.
