what do you guys think about the griots garage orbital?

if not what to you recommend for a first timer

I believe the Griot's product is a rebadged Porter Cable (same for Meguiars' version). You can probably find a Porter Cable (I use a 7424) for less at online tool vendors.

It's a re-badged PC. Nothing wrong with it at all though. But I think you can get a better deal via autogeek.net on a regular PC with some bonus pads. They're having a sale right now.

FYI-It's a random orbital, not an orbital polisher.

Owned one for two years, love it.

I believed Griot's orbital got more AMP than the PC's.

^^ +1 I thought Griots was slightly stronger, and maybe with a longer cord or something, but basically a 7424.

I use a Flex and am very pleased with it. I've never had to do significant paint correction, but for polishing out swirls and scratches, it has been fast and efficient.

Take a look into the Menzerna line of polishes they are some of the top rated polishes on the market used by many high end professional detailers.

If you have bad swirls and water spots, you may need more than a 2 step polish combination.

My typical two step combinations that I turn to are either:

Super Intensive Polish on an orange pad followed by Super Finish (106FA) on a white pad for deeper imperfections

Power Finish (PO203S) on a green pad followed by Nano Polish (PO85RD) using a black pad for lighter imperfections

If neither of those two combinations fit the bill, then I'll usually add in a more aggressive polish, like Optimum Hyper Compound with an orange pad or Menzerna Power Gloss.

As always, you want to start with the least aggressive combination that gives you the results your looking for and work your way up as needed. Ideally, you never want to remove more clear coat than is necessary. Take a look over our polishing guide to ensure you are getting the most out of your swirl removal.
