My E90 LCI taillight conversion! Pics inside

I picked this up from a fire damaged 2011 328xi last week and everything was in absolute mint condition. I always wanted the LCI tails because I didn't like the white patch on my non-LED pre-LCI tails. This was the perfect opportunity for me to be fully content with the back of my car without paying more than $1200 (Yes, this is including the paint job).

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The trunk included the carpet, the lock cylinder, roundel and also the original wiring harness that was of course cut from the car. I was able to dismantle the LCI trunk and pull out the entire wiring harness - figuring out what plugs into what. After experimenting with the LCI trunk's wiring, I was able to get a good idea on how to install the trunk on my pre-LCI car.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Here it is with just the outer tail light installed. I wouldn't recommend this because it will indeed make your car look weird.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I finally installed the new trunk on the pre-LCI car and ran into a problem where I didn't know how to take the wires off the clip for the inner tail lights. I tried leaving the original pre-LCI order for the wires and my rear fogs would stay on and the horizontal lines would not light up.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

After playing comparing with the old wiring harness, I finally figured out the correct LCI wiring order and I managed to fix the problem. Now the horizontal lines light up just like the outer ones.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

This is how it looks now. Yes, I know it looks weird but I'm going to have to take it apart and put the old trunk back while I bring the white trunk to be re-painted.

More pics coming soon!!!

A new lci trunk from Tischer is under $500, so that isn't bad either.
I got the tail lights and trunk for CAD$850 which was a steal considering that I got all the components that come with the trunk (carpet lining, lock cylinder, roundel, LED license plate lights etc).

How much does Tisher charge for the shipping usually? I guess this was a better solution for me since I didn't have to worry about shipping, duties and taxes to Canada. For car parts, we get nailed easily by the government.

Looks good. So are you just painting the trunk or blending the fender colors as well? I can't tell what color your car is so you might be able to just paint the trunk but it will look better if you have the fenders blended as well.

My car's Monaco Blue. I don't think I'm going to blend the fender colours since I want to keep my car as original as possible. I still have the old trunk and taillights so when I sell the car, I'll put everything back to factory condition.

I guess I'm happy as long you can't notice it from 2 feet away. I have to take off the trunk again to drop it off to the paint shop since they're going to take five days.

Being a darker color, he can probably get away with it. Guess it depends on how much of a perfectionist he is. It is hardly a ridic comment however, his car is 5 years old. I wont get into an explantation of why and it hardly matters as it isn't my car. Hope it turns out well OP.

I'm not too much of a perfectionist and you're absolutely right. The car is 5 years old and I just wanted a little update on the exterior to keep me going for another 2 years before I move to an F32.

I don't expect the the colour to match 100% - as long it's not noticeable within 2 feet away, I'm happy. I'm getting the trunk painted at one of the most reputable BMW authorised repair shops in Toronto so I know it will look good in the end.

I'll post updates on the final product in about a week or so!

I was considering getting the blacklines but once I saw this deal, I jumped on it right away. I've always liked the LCI tail lights. One thing that really bothered me was the white patch on the my old tails.

I'm pretty content with the look of the car now. I think I'm the second or third person on this forum who has done this conversion in Toronto. Hedges has a full fledged LCI conversion on his sparkling graphite E90 with a M3 hood. I saw his car on the highway a few times which is funny.

This is the car the parts came from. Apparently, the car has never been sold and it was destroyed by fire at a dealership lot. When I got the taillights, it still had the plastic film on.

BTW, I put the original trunk back on and I'm dropping the LCI trunk to the paint shop on Monday! Going to take some nice before and after pictures while I still can

Update! here is the finished product. The shop was able to colour match it 100% and I could not find any difference between the painted trunk and the quarter panels even in direct sunlight.

I badged it back as a 325i since right now, I do have the only E90 325i in Toronto with this tail light conversion. I also, got the car coded just now thanks to Dimsum and it is completely error free!
