Custom Dyno Tuned - Results & Comparison inside! MarkD vs Cobb 93 OTS vs Custom Tune

I was previously on the MarkD tune for the last two summers. Overall I didn't have much complaints about it, but last week I explored the option of a custom tune using the COBB AccessPort platform.

This past weekend a tuner out of SoCal came up to tune a bunch of cars and I got myself on that list The Dyno being used was Magnus's Dynojet out in Woodbridge.

Since I only use VPower 91, this is a 91 octane tune. Power mods: CP-e FMIC, CP-e catless DP, Akrapovic Evolution Exhaust (catless), aFe DCI. no meth

My impressions after the tune - holy crap the car feels totally different. The 295 Pilot Super Sports are spinning all the way past 160! Here's the dyno sheet comparing MarkD (Baseline) to Cobb OTS "Aggressive" to Custom Tune

Custom Tune vs MarkD - Gained +12.4whp +70.2tq

To compare MarkD to the Cobb OTS map - MarkD is making about 9whp but severely lacking in torque. If you compare the plots you can see mid range torque that the MarkD map was lacking.

In conclusion, this Custom Tune rocks!

Car on the dyno:

LoL theres someone underneath the car.

Those are great numbers for 91 octane, Magnus read a tad lower than other Dynojets
Who's the tuner if you don't mind me asking...

Can I assume the tuner was Jon D? Looks like it could be him in that last picture.

This is mine on my 2011 335is bone stock and using 94oct. Custom tune by Andy @ Neetronics.

nice numbers and based on your profile, you have a 323i with a 335i swap?

Darin, why would you compare a custom tune performed on your car with an off the shelf tune? I could have done that also. I would not call that a fair comparison at all. And your tune is 18 months old now, why not compare it with an off the shelf tune from that tuner from May 2011 ?

What do you mean it was not helping? He was totally satisfied with it back then so it had to be helping. It was not a custom tune. And back then, the torque at lower rpms had to be limited as the transmission ECU which is built into the tranny would cause a fault and limp mode. Cobb is most likely adjusting parameters in the tranny ECU. What I supplied was as good as you could get back in May 2011. And it's not what I flash into an auto car now.

You must be pretty dense if you are also comparing a custom tune done on a dyno with an off the shelf one, and a more recent one at that.

Have you ever though about asking the OP if he would like an "updated tune" (like you suggested above). If you claim you can hit same power levels as the Cobb/Custom, I would have thought you would have cared to share it with your customers. 70ft-lbs torque is a lot to gain and I don't recall the tranny ecu being that restrictive to hold back on that much of a power gain.

What cars have you "flashed now"? If I remember correctly, you never really posted a proper dyno of your tune. Darin's dyno is pretty much the only one I have seen that shows the numbers of your flash. I was also under the impression you do custom tuning before flashing peoples cars. You are saying you just buy off the shelf maps?

What exactly do you know about the ECU that is built into the auto cars? I had tuned some autos in July 2010 that has so much torque at lower rpms that the tranny ECU triggered a fault and put the car in a limp mode. That is why the torque was reduced in most of the auto tunes until some changes were made in the summer of 2011.

I had flashed two particular cars where the agreement with the owner was that I would pay for the dyno plus give them a discount on the tune. Darin was one of those people, (the other was a white 335iS 6MT) but both never took the car to the dyno even after I asked on various occasions. Darin got his tune on May 9, 2011 and I expected him to get to the dyno within a few weeks so I could post them here, but it never happened. But now he posts this dyno comparison and trashes the tune. That is disappointing when I was paying for the dyno and gave him a discount as an incentive. (same with the white 335iS)

And of course I offered Darin a new updated tune, but he never came to get it. This is part of my email to him from November of 2011:

I was also wondering if you can take the car to the dyno since that was part of the deal for the discount you got.
I also have a new, more powerful tune for auto cars now .... we could possibly dyno it also.

The changes made were for his mods, but it was not tuned on the dyno. If he had taken it to the dyno I would have made an update for it.

I made a LOTTT more power and I mean A LOT in may 2011 on the dyno so I'm not sure what you are on about? No adjustments whatsoever to the tranny or it's software.

Wait, you tune cars? Aren't you the guy who buys the tunes from Europe and then installs them with your laptop? That's what every post in recent history suggests.

So much torque? LOL, I put down 498 wtq and my tranny's been fine for another 50k since? Your dyno is showing 368..... There's hundreds of other members who could say the same as well.

I know the white 335is you are speaking of... he got pulled on by an off the shelf piggy with 0 other mods I guess he didn't bother to goto the dyno after that.

I think you need more HP
torque is good.
Also why not run 94 octane, give it a try.

MarkD is right, it's unfair to compare such tunes as they are set up for different parameters. Anyone with common sense can understand it's not an apples to apples comparison. Surely the OP wasn't talking $hit about Mark's tune. That would totally show how ignorant he would be....this whole post is a misunderstanding.

For an E9X M3 I'm not sure there are custom tuners in the GTA. If you have an N54 talk to dzenno from pro tuning freaks. He is in Mississauga. Maybe they can take care of the M3s now as well
