First oil change ? What mileage ?

Do what you like. While I prefer to change, I by no means imply that if you don't, your going to screw up your car. I just prefer to rid the break-in material, however slight, out of my engine. I plan to keep the car for a long time. I'm well aware of the quality of modern oils, as I've posted an oil analysis on this board several times, this oil change was not about the quality of the oil at 1300 miles, it was about what was floating around with that oil. After this, I will be changing at 7500 miles.(doing what I like...)

To add to the confusion here - I have a Hayabusa which also has a high compression, nickasil coated engine and the rule of thumb is to change the oil after about 100 or so miles because there ARE shavings in the oil that comes out. The 'rule of thumb' is actually from people who are Busa engine maniacs and they DO know what they're doing. Therefore, for my peace of mind, I'm just going to go ahead and change the oil on my E90.

feel free to change the oil as often as you want

but it's not needed until the car asks for it (or 1 year for those who don't drive too much). you're not going to hurt anything but your pocketbook by changing too often, but the car will be fine if you run by the manufacturer's service recomendation

off topic, are you a bit overweight?? the busa is the official bike of overweight middle aged guys here in the bay area

p.s. I have an SV650 and am not the skinniest guy either

My response to this(and I am not a metalurgist and I suspect we do not have one on this forum so we are all guessing) is that I think there are two components here for me... One is comfort in knowing I have clean oil and filter in my car.(It is without question one of the easiest and cheapest pieces of insurance you can do to make your engine last to its potential. That is almost inarguable.) Secondly, I have always been of the opinion that the first several thousand miles on an engine produce the most debris and particles inside the crankcase. If a $70 oil change can get rid of that. I think its a no brainer.. Of course the other side of that is, because this engine uses synthetic oil that lubricates at such a high level, is it just as important to leave it in to ensure the parts do break in correctly???? That I think is the answer we are looking for..

The answer is no. Issues are created when you switch your new car original oil(not synthetic) out with only a couple thousand miles and replace it with synthetic. What happens is the rings never have a chance to develope a nice seal. With BMW, the engine is designed from the start to use synthetic so it's not a problem.

You need to be able to unscrew two things. It isn't like building a rocket ship...

If you do carry out an oil change yourself and something goes awry, you may jeopardise your warranty. That is why I suggested that it should be carried out by a BMW service technician.

It's not about ease of anything, it's about risk management, especially with such an expensive vehicle.

Now everything may turn out just fine from a DIY oil change but BMW may not honour potential issues that may happen down the track. This is a possibility only, however small it may be.

Isn't the new oil the BMW dealership puts in also synthetic? What difference would new oil have on break-in then?

Most particles are released/generated in the first 1000 miles or so. I would be happier with a change at 1500 and then every 15,000 (or 7500 if you see the need).

FWIW...I guess a compromise will be to chage the oil filter and not the oil....all the contaminants should be trapped in the oil filter. So change the filter..2 minute job and everybody's happy!!!!

Seriously, it's a matter of preference and there is no right or wrong answers here. If it would make you sleep well at night, do it!!!! No need for snobbish remarks! Do what makes you happy and not worry about what others have to say about it!!!!
