One thing to consider are our terrible Michigan roads. I've had the standard setup and have driven a 335 with sports suspension and I would not have it on our roads. Does the CPO program cover carbon buildup?

From one fellow Michigander to another, you are so right! I can't tell you how many people I know who have tore up low profile tire/rim combos on our Michigan roads, especially during the cold season. I definitely need to consider that. I'm not sure that the CPO program automatically covers carbon buildup. I was told by a BMW dealership SA that in every 335d CPO carbon buildup car that had entered their dealership, BMW performed a "good will" carbon cleanup/parts replacement, assuming the SA was truthful. Some may interpret this as a little ambiguous and perhaps some may expect more from CPO than what it actually covers. Thanks, I appreciate the reminder about our roads!

My car has been at the dealer for two weeks for carbon in the intake. Since it only has 39000 miles on it, I think it will be good willed. They have already replaced the Urea tank on their dime. Such a shame!

Stories like these may definitely give pause to a potential 335d purchaser! It would be nice to hear many more good stories from all the problem free 335d owners who have accumulated serious miles without carbon buildup related issues.

It looks and drives like new, except for this carbon problem. I'm afraid it will happen to all NA 335ds eventually. I sure wish there was a shop close by that could do the bypass mod. I feel that's the only long term solution at this time.

I agree and if and when I purchase a 335d, I will consider doing the bypass mod and keep the car for a long time.

I'm so glad that I can take my time and have flexibility with a 335d purchase, especially being that I'm keeping my durable 2003 VW Jetta TDI. I would be livid if I purchased a new or very new preowned 335d with the way the carbon buildup and related issues appear to be influencing depreciation and affecting current values. I recently met a gentleman who has a 2005 Mercedes E320 CDI and he gave me 10 reasons why I should buy a E320 CDI and avoid the 335d. He was too funny and of course a very passionate E320 CDI owner. Before the 335d came out, the E320 CDI was my next turbodiesel car upgrade. Even he had to admit that after driving a 335d, the 335d is a beast performance wise!

I can't say enough good things about my previous ride, a 2005 E320 CDI that I sold to my mechanic (his wife drives it and won't part with it!) at about 203,000 miles. The only thing that kept me from holding on to it was my wife who got stranded in it twice - once for a faulty serpentine belt install (they should have replaced the pulley at 200,000 miles!), the transmission had a processor that would go into limp mode by mistake, and the perceived expense of rebuilding the Sens-o-tronic brakes (which BTW Mercedes has a really good extended warranty on and rebuilt for free!).

The 335d was for a "sports car" experience that I missed from my old Porsche days, without the extra $10,000 overprice that Porsche seems to have on its cars nowadays.

Wow, 203,000 miles! That's some good mileage AND somebody else is still driving it happily! I already have a sports car so I won't need to rely heavily on a 335d for that. Most recommend the 335d sport, but the base model would be fine for me with my style of driving and my long straightaway highway commute. Matter fact, I would be very happy and content with the luxury, space and performance of a E320 CDI if I could find one clean enough and reasonably priced. I do like the spaciousness of the E320 CDI compared to my Jetta TDI.

I wouldn't worry about the roads....well right now is kind of a grey area with the gulches the winter left behind. I'm paying extra attention until everything gets patched up. The car will definitely need some different rubber for the winter though. The run flats had a tough time on 75s with the slick roads this morning.

I've been talking with a few out of state dealers. The last time I checked, no local dealer had anything that I was interested in. What do you think of the 328d? I've heard complaints about the performance (or lack in comparison to the 335d) and the feel of the electric steering.

I'd take the 328d to prom if I was a freshmen or sophomore. Junior and senior year I would need a date that is slimmer and performs at the press of a button.

My 335d...

I have owned her for one year yesterday! She has been in the shop (BMW) 9 times in that year.

1: SES light, replaced 3 injectors 45,905 miles
2: SES light, full service reset light 48,127 miles
3: Exhaust fumes in cabin, replaced exhaust back pressure sensor 52,870 miles
4: SES light, replaced all 6 injectors, SCR metering valve and mass air sensor 63,308
5: SES light, replaced EGR valve 63,961
6: SES light, replaced 6 glow plugs and charge air temp sensor 65,577
7: SES light, replaced mass air sensor (2nd time) 66,352
8: SES light, replaced DPF filter (no warrantee good will by BMW) 67,276
9: SES light, replacing 1 injector (The 10th to be replaced) and CO2 sensor 67,900

I was advised today that BMW has no idea what to do to fix my car and that BMWNA is simply "throwing remedy's" at it hoping one will work...

Please save yourself the possible frustration and stay away from the 335d!!!

When I got my car, nobody had any complaints about this particular model. They were all simply too new to experience any issues.
Now, it is a totally different case. You have to understand 335d is like a woman. Every month you have to say good bye and take her to the dealer for a week (or more).
