misfiring in cylinder 5 w/ cobb

So last summer I had a misfiring issue in cylinder 5 when running cobb stage 2 I think v401 and I changed the spark plug and everything was working fine and now that summer is right around the corner I figured I would load the tune on for some fun and it started misfiring in cylinder 5 again.

Do you guys think this is a fuel injector issue as opposed to a spark plug issue? The new spark plugs have around 12k miles on them now.

I am going to data log tonight, since I live in the city and it just snowed here there are only a few places I can do a 2nd-3rd gear pull on with out running into some traffic.

Thanks,

Swap the coil to another cylinder to see if the misfire follows. If so, you have a bad coil.

GOOD CALL! I didn't even think of that, so tempting to just leave my desk, roll up the sleeves, and get under the hood.

If you know, how much is a new BMW Coil?

Also, i know i have to remove my engine cover and some other stuff to get to the coil but do i have to put that all on again before driving or is it safe to drive with out all that stuff on?

Coils are around $50.00 at Tischer. You can drive with the cover off just expect it to be noisy.

OK, well I will swap the coil out of cylinder 5 to another and post again tomorrow with the results.

I think it would be safe to assume that if the misfire continues in cylinder 5 then it has to be the injector because the spark plug is relatively new.

If the coil isn't the issue, I suppose you could swap plugs as well just to rule them out...

You could also check the gap on the plug. Stock gapping is .04 if I recall correctly.

Over-time that gap increases which causes the misfiring more times then not.

I want to say they have around 8k-10k miles on them maybe less.

What is odd is when I changed the spark plug last summer the car ran fine afterwards and the misfire keeps happening in cylinder 5, none of the others have this issue.

So knowing that, I would say if its not the coil pack (which I will find out tonight if it is) then it has to be the fuel injector, right?

Regards,

I had the same symptoms last year and turned out to be the coil. If you have high mileage you may want to swap them all as preventive maintenance. Or you could just keep a couple extras in your garage for when they do fail. Tick tock.

I don't think mileage has anything to do with it. Its about heat cycles. I have barely 33K miles on my 2008 335i and I've just replaced my first coil.

I've also replaced 2 injectors, but they were old part numbers...

Coil packs all made before 2011 are prone to fail. I havent seen one made after fail.

My car only has 33k miles on it, I changed the potentially bad coil to another cylinder. Tonight I will find out if it a bad coil or not.

Thanks for all the help.

Coil # 5 is a SOB. Why is it always the first one to go?
