It's happened to me now

After being on here every day and reading every single HPFP thread and somehow thinking....wow, I have almost 40K miles..and maybe it won't happen to me....I think it has..

I had been getting limp mode a few times lately but after re-starting, it was fine. But yesterday, it was idling rough. Then this morning, it's really bad and constant Engine Malfunctions. And restarting isn't fixing it this time. So I'm assuming it has to be the pump.

Either way, I'm sure there have been a few people that have had this exact situation and had DCI's and JB3?

So my questions are...cause I just want to be sure..

1. Obviously, I need to take the JB3 out...do you think I should put the stock intake back in too?

2. How should I do the codes? Should I clear everything right away, take JB3 out then clear, or clear only some codes? I know I have a few right now. I'm at work now so I have to get home and see exactly what codes it's throwing. It happened literally a few minutes ago and I had to get to work...

Sad to read

The safest bet is to take out the JB3, clear all codes and then have the car trigger new codes related to the HPFP.

Are you still under warranty?

wow id say take it down as soon as possible and if your dealer is nice they might give you a new one.

mentioning the hpfp recall may help...

BMW may still cover the part under "Kulanz" so hopefully you'll only have to pay for the labour.

I know..I was just answering his question..

But that doesn't apply over here anyway.

I just hooked up the BT and I have 3100, 30FE, 29D2 (misfire on cylinder 6).

When I start it up now, it doesn't give me engine malfunction but the service engine soon light comes on.

For now, I'm at least going to put the factory intake back in and take the JB3 out, clear the codes and drive it till it throws some codes again. Or should I just leave these codes there and take it in? I mean, will they know that these codes could have come from a piggyback? This is where I'm confused.

What sux is that I'm shipping it out for the states in about 2 months or less. But it has to be running right when I drop it off.

It will definately suck to have to pay anything here....it's expensive and the exchange rate sux!!!

With the misfire, is that possible that I just need my something else done (injectors, spark plugs)?

I do have a guy down the road that works on BMW's that could do this much cheaper for me...

Yeah, I called a dealership down at Mannheim and he said they'd do a goodwill (which I assume that's what that means) if it's the pump because they know about this problem. Only having to pay for the labor will be ok with me...even though that will still be a good chunk....

Normally the dealership where you bought the car is still covering warranty at "good will" for a few days/weeks/miles after it expires...I think you can also persuade them to cover the labor too. Don't give up easily !

Well, I got the JB3 and the DCI's out and cleared the codes and it's running fine now. Guess I'll just wait and see what happens. If/when it throws anymore, I'll take it in. I think I may just not drive it until I leave so I can just get the damn thing back to the states where I'm at least under warranty....

Same boat

I had the same issues. They saw a misfire on cylinder 6. They switched the coil to cylinder 5 and tried to get the code to come back and it didn't. I had 50mi of my warrenty left when I took it in and I know they did some driving to try and get the code back. Still pretty nervous about it.

I haven't gotten the car back since I am out of town for work. I did make sure to ask what happens should it come back. They said they would cover it for me.

FYI I was running a Procede and Stett CAI. Procede came out and Stett stayed in and had no issues.

Let me know if they find something different on yours and I will let you know if mine comes back. I hope is just a coincidence that we both have a misfire on the same cylinder.

HPFP is actually warrantied for 10 years/ 120,000 miles.

Remember, not a big deal to swap out HPFP's yourself for $220!

^^Yes, I know all about all of that.

But I'm out in nowhere Germany right now.....can't even begin to explain what a pain it will be to take it in here for a major problem...not to mention expensive in the end no matter how much goodwill they give me...

Interesting. Yeah, let me know what happens with your's. Mine is fine now (fingers crossed). I drove it around yesterday after I put stock parts back in and I drove it to work today and it is driving fine. I really do not want to have to take it to a dealer here. So I'm going to drive it VERY minimal until I leave here and pray that nothing happens again.

Like I said, I've gotten a few "Engine Malfunctions/Reduced power"s since I put in the JB3. But every time, I would search on here with the codes I was getting and most would say it's no big deal, common. So I would just clear them and when I started it back up, it had no problems.

BUT yesterday, I started it after work and it was idling roughly but no codes or anything. Then the next morning I started it and I got "Engine Malfunction/Reduced power" and it was idling rough as hell like it was going to die. And when I would restart it, it would come back right away. So I went to work then came home later and when I started it this time, it seemed fine and the "Engine Malfunction" wasn't coming up but now it says "Service Engine Soon."

So I put the stock parts back in and cleared the codes and now it's like new it seems.

This shit makes me a nervous wreck over here. But whatever, that's just how it goes with this car. Once I get back to the states, I will be a lot less stressed about this because I can go to a dealer that speaks English, maybe knows a little more about these problems (they don't know much about these common problems with the N54 motor over here probably because there aren't too many owners), I have the so-called recall that I can maybe use and finally, I have a factory warranty along with the 120K mile/10 year warranty if it is the HPFP eventually.

Will335i, any update?

I got the same thing this morning. But the Engine Malfunction goes away and it runs fine but the Service Engine soon light stays on. I'm gonna take it somewhere...just don't know where yet.

Well, they called and said it's the spark plugs and a cylinder coil. I think that's what they said on the second part....280 Euro....we'll see how this goes...

hpfp recall can happen no matter the milage (but the time frame where you're allowed to get the recall expires, I believe)
The hpfp recall is for life

(will be active some time in Dec 2010)

Well, I went to pick up the car yesterday. He tells me they put new spark plugs and an ignition coil in. I go out, start it up and it immediately is NOT idling right and then after a few seconds, Engine Malfunction. I tell the guy, he gets the tech. The tech comes out and he looks baffled. He takes my car in the garage and hooks up the scanner, clears the code and then looks at me. I say "So?" He doesn't speak English but is able to say "Normal." My wife has just dropped me off and we're both pissy and I'm in a hurry so I just drive off. It drives fine when it's been running for a few minutes but this is the same thing as before. I wasn't able to start it this morning but I'm SURE it will do the same thing on a cold startup tomorrow.

Has anyone had this same process? I'm not too worried because at least now when it throws another code, I just go right back to them and they have to fix it....but damnit, this is annoying...
