M Sport Shift Knob

So I installed a new Alcantara shift boot and had to remove the stock leather boot.
When taking it out the knob is actually attached to the leather.

When I reinstalled the shift knob back on it frequently will just come off?

I’ve pushed it down as hard as possible and it’s orientated correctly.

Is this because it’s no longer attached via the leather piece as well that was previously holding it in place?

No. It should just press in place like you did.
Is it OEM or aftermarket?

I installed a lighted short shifter on my M3 and it would sometimes come off shifting to 2nd. Found a thread here that also complained about the same problem and the persons answer was to smack down on it real hard (think pounding on a table). So I did, and it never came off again

Punch it down some more and it will stay.

It’s just the normal OEM m sport knob. It will press in but then it will just come off randomly sometimes.

I took a rubber mallet and hammered the shit out of it and it still came off on me so I’m not really sure what the issue is then

The locking fingers aren’t grabbing the shaft tight enough.

If it were me I’d put a dab of e6000 on the groove and slam it in again

E6000 is a glue, but it also peels like silicone so kind of the best of both worlds on something where you need it to stay but still be removable if absolutely needed later.

Just an idea.

Not a bad idea. I’m thinking about getting the silver shift knob with Alcantara anyways so might not be worth it for me to put glue on there yet.
