Relocating the Start Button

I was curious if anyone relocated the start button and if there were any problems? If you did, where did you put it? Pictures?

One other thought I had is relocating the headlight switch. Again, any pictures if you have done it?

I am debating that as a gauge location. It is is a really visibile location and obviously a very integrated location.

I suspect visibility is dependent on your steering wheel height/seat height.

Sounds interesting. If you want to relocate the start button, I'd suggest somewhere on the center trim near the shifter...

I thought of that, but there is not a lot of room there unfortunately. I was thinking of moving it to the other side of the steering wheel near the driver's side vent. I could open up a small hole on the right side of that vent and sink it, then use the current hole and open it enough to support a gauge.

I had a 41mm VEI unit cut into the other side to match the start button...

Craig, do you know if I can relocated the start button there? The side where the start button is located will accomodate a much larger gauge.

Did you just dremmel it out? The material didn't fragment at all?

It should accomodate the start button as its smaller...we had to dremel some stuff out and wound up having to cut a support that really didn't affect anything. But at that point I was too far along in the project to turn back...lol

Oh, so your metal support that friction mounts the trim was removed? I am not fond of that idea.

I have done some pretty extensive fab work, so I am not worried about that. I just want to make sure there are not issues that moving it could cause. Check my Snow Performance Stage 3 Review/DIY for some of the fab work I have done.

the button is essentially a contact switch, I don't see why moving it (extending the wires as needed) would cause any problems. The biggest issue would be your fab skills, so that it would still look clean.

That is what I thought as well, but don't know if anyone had experience. Any good ideas on where to put it and keep it clean?

Actually its not. I took a close look at this over on e46fanatics a while back to try to use one in the e46. See pics below.

Besides trying to find a suitable location for the switch you may have issues with extending the harness. I would be cautious in trying to extend the wires without knowing the potential impact. I would try that first before drilling any holes.

EDIT:
Snagged a pic of the harness (ribbon cable) from the web. Posted for posterity.

High Voltage, very useful info. That is exactly what I was looking for. I am going to abandon this idea now.

The next option would be relocating the headlamp switch, but that is a bulky item to move.

I know this is pretty far fetched but is there no other way of gathering the data for display onto a screen? I saw a thread where someone had a lcd gauge integrated into the mirror...

I did too and it looked good. The problem with an OBDII gauge setup is that a piggyback alters the signals so the gauge is not accurate. That side curtain airbag hurts a lot of what we can do.

No, I dont mean using OBDII. I know about the boost reading issue with a tune over OBDII. If we are discussing the boost then you could get the data from the Procede logging feature. If we are talking about the Snow, then Im not sure without seeing the interface. Sorry, I know its a very involved solution, just throwing it out there.
