N54 vs N55

Hey guys, so I have searched, but i wanted some more direct answers.

I recently sold my FBO N54 e92 335xi and was hoping to find an MY2009-2010 N54 e93 but they're not easy to come by. I started looking into N55 e93s and was just wondering the potential the engine has compared to the N54. Obviously I know it won't make as much power as the N54 but what are the numbers for a FBO N55?

I figured i'd post in the N55 section because you guys are probably more knowledgable on the N55 platform.

Thanks in advance guys

Oh that's not bad at all. Do you know what the numbers would be without E85?

About 350-360 whp/410 torque on 93

380-400 whp/450 torque on e85.

2014 335i and 435is make about 20 whp more

That's actually pretty good. I was expecting low 300s.. But pleasantly surprised. All I really wanted was 400whp anyways so that answers that.

If you're running a stock Cobb map and get pro tuned could you see numbers above 380-400?

Thanks for the replies guys

I'll probably end up just running the Cobb tune first and then slowly working my way up to FBO with a protune. Now I'm much more open to N55s though. At first I strictly just wanted an N54. We'll see what cars come up for sale though

In our testing we've found the N55 is an awesome engine that is somewhat hindered by a tiny turbo. FBO + E85 cars are good for ~380whp and TONs of torque(460wtq+.) On pump gas 350whp is doable.

Keep in mind that dyno numbers are subjective and can vary wildly. Find a nice, optimistic dyno and 400whp may be possible but that doesn't mean it's any faster than a dyno reading 380whp.

Turbo opions are also coming available. For $1k you can get your 400whp with the PTF stage 1. High 400's are possible for $2500. We should see 2 more stage 2 options coming out later this year.

I like the N55 for the reliablility. Never had one single issue and running for 3 years almost.

I would say 20 whp is pretty generous considering its a similar engine. AFAIK our cars max out in the 390s and the F30/F32 are about the same if not MAYBE 10 whp more but Terry's F32 is the only car that I've seen making power like that.

Really? I've had my N55 since December, and have had a plethora of issues.

In absolutely no way am I saying that it's a bad car - I freaking love the thing! Even though it's a prissy little princess

Most issues I've come across were like: low coolant, low tire pressure, and low gas.

Similar engine, but I don't think the turbo is identical. It seems that the housing has a larger 4" outlet (vs 3" on earlier N55's) which seems to make a pretty big difference.

+1 itll easily make 20 hp more than early n55's. Its just that the electronic solenoid cars are still having issues with e85.

N55 is far more reliable than N54, it was one of the main goals for BMW engineers(the other being efficiency).

Any and all cars/engines will have ones that just constantly have issues. German cars seem to more than most.

Yeah, I've come to terms with the idea that my car falls under that category.

Ya Terry's f32 barely broke 400whp and that was FBO with his unreleased solenoid fix. I lurk on all the e9x and f3x forums and I've yet to see what you are talking about so I guess I agree to disagree

I hear ya, but there is a difference. Terry's 435 dynoed somewhere around 414 (link), while most e9X FBO's are around the 390 range it seems. There seems to be a ~20-25 hp difference at the wheels which has been chalked off to the larger 4" outlet on the F30's turbo, but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't mean to get off topic though. OP, the N55 is definitely a great platform! Plenty of power, and hopefully there will be some more aftermarket turbo options soon for those of us hungry for more .
