how is this possible?
the 330i has 40 more horses
but car and driver managed to get a 6.1 sec 0-60 time with the 325i. In the Oct 05 comparison they clocked the 330i at 6.0 sec. Both were manual. Is there really that little of a difference? Or is the difference more noticeable in auto versions, b/c 40 more hp is a lot. If the performance difference is that small, i feel like i wasted my $6k for bigger tires, chrome trim and xenons. In the E46 there was a CLEAR difference like over a second. |

someone here's mentioned that the brakes on the 325 are smaller. Therefore it has less rotational momentum thus making the gears ratio shorter. So the 325 accelerate pretty quick compared to the 330i.

How is less rotational momentum make the gears ratio shorter? Less rotational momentum would mean less of the power would be "lost" to turning the wheel assembly, but even at that, I cant immagine it would make up for 40 hp.

i concur with r3amir's statement. loads of acceleration in my 325. more than enough in a big city full of cars on the road all the time.

hehe, you guys aren't thinking!!!
they basically make the same times cause of LOW_END TORQUE!!! there is little of it, its when the cars starts pulling higher up that the 3 stage induction of the 330i starts to pulls from the 325i. try doing like 50-75 with the 325i and the 330i and there will be a clear difference.

If you look at the gearing ratios, the 325 does infact have lower gearing, it shares the same ratios with the 4cyl 320, only the final diff ratio is different between the 320 and 325.
This would make it take off easier, but the 330 should definitely pull away at higher speeds. BMW's official 0-100km time is 7.1 seconds for a 325i manual, a clear difference from the 330. Getting a 6.1 0-60mph is either luck, BMW conservatism, or a complete lack of mechanical sympathy... take your pick.

325 got smaller brakes 11.8 inches (330 got 13.2 inches). 325 is 132 LBS lighter than 330. US version.
In real world normal driving situation, if you drive two E90s one 330 and one 325 ( US versions) you wouldn't notice which one is which. You have to get out of the car and look at the badge. 330 is better than 325 but not much.
