Reduced Power warning when coming off throttle

Had my first track event today complete with an instructor and classroom time. Put 100 track miles on it and used 2-3 gals of 70/30 meth.

Running Proceed 2.5 and PWM meth.

The car ran great, stayed with the V8s on the track on the straights, but it wasn't perfect. I had a few times where I got the reduced power warning and half engine light and I finally figured out that it happend when I came off the throttle to brake. I was able to manage the problem mostly by not flooring the throttle and easing off it a little to brake.

Is this just a throttle closure boost spike that is leaking at that higher pressure? or do I need to be thinking about something else?

pull the code. no sense posting without pulling the code first. we would just be guessing... my guess is the vanos solenoids.

I have the same thing happening with the exact same set up. Happens more often when I have to let up quickly as you said. I emailed Shiv about it, as I was logging at the time. My codes were 2A87 VANOS exhaust and 3100 boost-pressure control, deactivation. 3100 is just a result of the vanos code. He (Shiv) guessed it was the vanos before I read the code (63k) on the car. Cars been modded most all of those miles. So I am going to pull em and clean em before replacing them as it's pretty easy and I've heard this has fixed many Vanos 2A87 codes thrown.

Good luck. I bet that track event was fun and you had to have a few impressed passengers.

Yep.. the vanos code is pretty common on higher mileage cars with tunes. And more harder your car accelerates, the harder it is for the vanos system to keep up with demands. Not uncommon to have to replace both solenoids at 45-50k in such cases. The dealership will insist on cleaning the solenoid first but that rarely works long-term. Which is why we recommend replacing them both. Each one costs around $100 and takes 5 min to install with a 10mm wrench.

Thanks for the info. I don't have any codes to read because I cleared them (via the gas pedal) to get back on the track. Unless they can still be read

I'm at 64k miles so seems reasonable I need to look into that.

Some one needs to post a sticky for key maintenance items for highly modded cars by mileage with common issues when items needs replacement.

I had this happen on Saturday. Exhaust Vanos was the culprit. Replaced today.
Exact symptom as yours, but still worth having it checked out.

FWIW, My service receipt reads: Fault 2A87 DME: Exhaust Mechanism.

Good Luck

Had this same thing happen to me last friday. Exhaust side VANOS error code 2A87, with a limp mode popping up as soon as I got off throttle.

It only happened once and didn't happen again after, but I was changing my oil on sunday and decided to pop them out and cleaned them anyway. Hasn't come back since.

I also swapped the intake and exhaust solenoids, to see if I get an VANOS intake error next time.

I had the same problem a few weeks back. Got up to high speed, hit the brake, reduced power mode. Was my vanos solenoid. Dealer replaced both intake and exhaust. Been good ever since
