Does muffler delete increase hp/tq or is it a "sound only mod"?

Title say it all. Any functional gain from muffler delete, or does it just produce more aggressive sound? -TMc

a muffler delete will increase hp and torque because the muffler obviously causes backpressure. Reducing backpressure (taking off cats or muffler or installing high performance tubing) does increase power but its nothing to write home about. A muffler delete takes about 40 lbs off your car and does give it an "aggressive" tone, but you shouldnt be expecting to feel much of a difference when you hit the gas. I'd say expect a +10hp/+10lb/ft increase

More sound than any gain. Lose some low end, breathes just a little
better up high, but none of the gains are anything to write home about.

Do not fear young grasshopper.

I had the same intrepidation, but I'll tell you that it simply doesn't sound like an un-muffled car. It really does sound like a great performance exhaust.
I had it in for service recently and a bunch of the mechanics came over to hear and see it. They all said it's the best sounding exhaust they've ever heard for a 3'er!!!

I asked all the same questions but eventually just went on faith, knowing that I could put the stock muff back on for cheap if it was too loud.

But It's perfect!! (for me any way). No way I'll ever put the stock muffler back on!

Go for it! Worst your out is under $200 to try it and put it back stock if you don't like it. Sure beats laying out $700 or $900 for some of the performance mufflers and then not like it!!!

We are the Delitists! (besides, then you can put an MD after your name!)

So you gain more noise and nothing else? Man I am so confused. Does the service guys frown on this delete?

Only a sound mod.

A lot of people believe more sound = more power, thus the butt dyno feels a gain.

Wrong. Tested 325 with and without muffler delete. The 325 with MD pulled on the stocker. Have you tested it?

Let's think about it for a second... Muffler = restrictive air silencer that let's LESS air through. No Muffler = Not nearly as restrictive and let's MORE air exit the car.

Now what's one of the first things you learned about cars? More air in and more air out = More power.

Thank you and good night.

For me no noticable change in low end torque. But did notice stronger pull at higher RPM's. Never dyno'd before or after to provide empirical data. Butt dyno report only. But we all know that louder exhaust gives the illusion of power and in that regard it's been very gratifying!

I never did the delete for performance gains. For me it was all about the sound. Anyone who thinks that any exhaust mod only will yield any significant (or any) performance increase is in for a disappointment.

i beg to differ... you are freeing up some back pressure from the muffler.

if anything it might only be a few hp but i'd put money on it that if you dyno'd stock vs delete... you'd see a slight difference.

You are not going to notice a slight difference. You probably wouldn't notice a 10hp difference, and there is no way a muffler delete is making more than 2 or 3 hp, if that.

I'd put money on dynoing two of the exact same cars and having a slight difference. This goes to what Papa13 said as well. Who gives a shit if one car pulled, you are talking two different drivers, 2 different cars. That is saying absolutely nothing.

A dyno is going to be the best proof, but who is going to waste time and money dynoing a muffler delete? A full exhaust, maybe. Muffler delete, no.

Also, if you delete the muffler, thus meaning more air out, what are you doing to get more air in and make more power? You are still using the stock intake system and bringing in the same amount of air and fuel.

Whatever though, this is not worth arguing about anymore. Its a SOUND mod, and unless anyone can provide some real evidence instead of a mad tyte street race or what they heard from a friend of a friend of a friend, that's all it will be.

KTHXBYE

fine think what you want.

and i did say it might only be a few hp if that... but it does feel faster in acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gear from 4k rpms and up. I never said it WASN'T a sound mod but was only trying to express that it does seem to have some (even if its very small) performance gain to it as well.

If only there is a design for more HP with less noise. Kinda kills that whole luxury feel. I came from a moded GTI and there are days I just want to go home quietly with my music.

It may add 1 or 2 hp, but it is nothing significant, and nothing noticeable. Most will think it feels faster due to the sound.

Don't get me wrong, I am not against this mod one bit, and I am actually planning on doing it sometime in the near future. But, if you are doing it for power, you are doing it for the wrong reason. It will not make a noticeable difference. I am speaking from experience from several cars, and unless the E90 has some ridiculous muffler, removing it will not add much, if any HP.

Sorry if my previous post came off a little strong, but the muffler delete should not be thought of as a performance (power wise) mod. That is all.

Both the cars were auto.. no driver difference. There are many people out there who "care" if a modded car pulls on a stocker. If you don't, that's cool. I am merely stating facts to the OP who asked.

Unsubscribed.

HP increase with performance intake/exhaust

FWIW: The BMW performance intake produces an extra 3 HP @6000 rpm. The BMW performance exhaust produces an extra 5 HP @ 6000 rpm. This from the Plano, TX BMW dealership web site.
