DIY Solution Needed: Rear View Video Camera?
Alright, this is a somewhat weird request. I am considering purchasing a condo that has an incredibly tight parking garage. Its challenging to back in even with someone serving as an outside guide! Because I don't have a nav system with a camera/smart parking capability, I'm thinking about installing some type of video camera system on my car. Has anyone installed a video camera on their cars? I guess there would need to be a feed to my iphone via bluetooth?
Anyway, love to get your thoughts... |

Also, I don't think video over bluetooth exists yet in the marketplace.

LOL! Sorry Even after re-reading the OP I skipped that sentence. Now I see it.
I know there are solutions that most Car Audio stores will cary with a 2.5" to 3" screen that you could mount where the Optional Portable BMW Nav would go OP. (agreed video over bluetooth isn't around for us yet ) Edit: It could mount like this: |

It seems like you'll be looking at a wireless backup camera system.

Not a huge fan of the wireless systems since there is always a bit of lag from my experience. More worth it to pick up the camera system from the thread I posted since it is OEM like and then run it to an auxiliary screen.

Thinking out of the box...if you're only concerned about backing into your garage and you want to use your I-Phone...you could mount a camera in your garage and access it via your I-Phone's internet connection. You'll have to deal with some lag in the system but you wouldn't have to install anything on the car.

I'd rather setup a parking system in garage than try to mount video cameras in my car.
My parents used to have these towers that would bend easily and had a flag on the top. When you hit the tower, the flag would wave. |

Thats a much better solution that these guys proposed.
My father does the same thing with the flag. Or you hang a tennis ball so that when it touches your glass you stop |

Now all you need is a shark to mount it to....

I've been thinking about doing this as well. I think the only practical solution, in the absence of iDrive, is to use a camera system in combination with an aftermarket GPS unit. The GPS will have to have a video input, which few have.

So I've done some further research and the biggest hurdle is to find a GPS unit with video input. The following models do have the video inut, but all are old, outdated and/or discontinued and come with their own problems.
Garmin Nuvi 5000 Garmin 885 Magellan Roadmate 1700 I don't understand why some of the newer models don't offer a video-in feature? Not even the very expensive ones! Seems I'm SOL for now!

Attach tennis ball to a rope and hang from your garage ceiling! When ball bumps your car, step on brakes and you're all done! Not even $10! Just need a ladder and a pretty decent stapler! Works for me!

Dynavin
If you were in the market for a Head Unit upgrade the Dynavin supports wireless cameras I believe , that new model is looking tempting . But there is
still all the crap that goes with and aftermarket head unit I guess. Mport13 brilliant. |
