i know this maybe too early since it's not done but if i were to drop my turbo to achieve this set up how much am i roughly looking at? i already have spare set of turbo btw so i can just ship it out to TD... it just looks way more attractive way of doing it than getting some other after market trubo, well, of course, if price is reasonable that is...

Final cost of the upgrade hasn't been determined yet. All depends on the results of the testing and if there's any further work needed. The interesting bit is going to be the modification and enlargement of the exhaust turbine wheel.

It shouldn't be too much longer before the final results are available for everyone to see

can you keep me in the loop for this. if price is in the right range, i may jump in the van for this. but again, i also need to figure out on "tune" as well. i'm currently on procede, not ecu flash so...

I'm under the impression that Shiv ,sometime, mentioned that as a result of the forthcomming "autotunning" feature , the procede will be able to handle bigger turbos as well.

I hope this will be finaly the case. One of the serious drawbacks for me is the "programming"-part of a turbo upgrade.

curious.... .. maybe i'm missing it, but is this supposed to come out better than the ASR setup that's already available ?

I'm not knocking the reasearch and development work at all... i think it's great !! just trying to understand what makes these different than the ASR setup... (and why, someone, i'm too lazy to click back and remember who, from the states is expressing interest in this, and not just jumping on ASR's thing)

And yes... just confirming.. with Procede V4.. it will handle larger turbos as the auto-learn feature is managing the wastegate duty cycle according to shiv....

I think it will be a better long-term proposition than the ASR upgrade, for the simple reason that the upgrade I'm doing in the UK retains full use of the water cooling as well as the regular oil cooling. The ASR modification dispenses with the water cooling, and relies solely on a ceramic core and oil cooling to protect against over heating and consequent heat-induced failure.

Given the extreme temperatures the turbos generate, and the amount of carbonisation evident within the turbo housing when I took them off the car originally, I would be extremely wary of using upgraded turbos that haven't got the full raft of cooling options open to them.

No, Turbo Dynamics will not supply an 8mm actuator rod. You will need to purchase the replacement part from BMW (two of them) and send them onto Turbo Dynamics. They will use the new actuator rods, make a small modification to the arm, and fabricate new bushings to suit.

i dont think the actuator rods are the issue here but the actual Wastegate assebly inside the exhaust manifold. 6mm should be fine if the assembly is fixed.

On what basis do you make those thoughts? Have you taken the turbos apart to inspect the assemblies and measured the tolerances of the rods and bushes?

I can tell you categorically that your assumptions are incorrect. The wastegate assembly is actually perfectly fine, even under heavy load and high temperatures. The problem lies with the actuator rod. In high temperatures there is distortion of the actuator rod, and this leads to the wastegate being left partially open and therefore not sealing properly. If the rod were perfectly true, the wastegate would be fine. When the rod distorts, it starts prematurely wearing the bushing away so that the aperture no longer remains circular, but in fact becomes slightly elliptical. This increase in bushing tolerance leads to excess movement of the arm, and coupled with the distortion this leads to the wastegate diaphragm going out of alignment.

The 8mm is much less prone to head-induced distortion, and so the alignment of the wastegate diaphragm remains true. FACT.

ok thanks for the explanation makes sense.
By the way i have 6mm rods and never had a rattle or poor sealing issue. Seems some cars are more prone to develop the rattle than others.

You're lucky. Not all cars have rattling wastegates, so you may be fine. But if you start driving the car very hard on track and really get some heat into those turbos, you'll probably find the limitations of the existing turbos quite easily.
