Does the oem oil cooler have a thermostat?

I come from the Subaru community where it was frowned upon for daily drivers to have an oil cooler without a thermostat to allow the car to reach optimal temp quickly before cooling the oil. Does the BMW oil cooler have a thermostat? I ask this because my 335i takes 2-3 times longer to reach average optimal temp compared to my wrx.

yes there is one. Stett does a thermostat delete and ads a better core for better cooling. Search there is a thread about this.

enrita, STETT has a thermostat delete or lower temp thermostat on their kits now. I will be testing the one with a lower temp thermostat shortly.

I think the lower temp thermostat will be an enormous hit. STETT is taking their time but doing this right. I hope to finish off my testing in the next 10 days or so.

FBIS, can you already give a short overview of the pros and cons of the modified thermostat?

well the thermostat will open on a lower set oil temperature which will allow the oil cooler to start working earlier thus keeping temps on lower level.

Autobahn335i, you guys know me... I try to post based on facts I have collected rather than speculation. I want try to continue that trend here.

With that said, we know the stock thermostat allows oil to the oil cooler at around 230-235F. That means your oil cooler is worthless until your oil temperature hits ~230-235F... whether you have one or five oil coolers. I think getting a thermostat that allows oil to flow to the oil cooler at a lower temperature is critical. STETT took this idea and built it into their oil cooler kit with huge Setrab oil cooler. I have it sitting at my house and I can tell you it is a very well built kit.

Sounds like your WRX has a water temp gauge. Your 335i has an oil temp gauge. Your 335i's water temp warms up very fast, but BMW wants you to take it easy until the oil is warm too.
