Is this right for the 335's? Just put it in 2nd and pull? All the other post about the knob are owner's of 05 Bimmers.

So after reading all the forums, and pulling as hard as I could as advised by everyone, I admitted defeat and headed down to the Dealership (peterpanbmw in San Mateo, CA). I was thinking that maybe there is something different on the '08 coupes.

I called ahead, and talked to the service people, and they said if the work is a simple switch of gear knob they would do it for free. I thought that was a good result for me, as I couldn't seem to manage to do it myself.

So imagine the scene.... first guy tries to pull it off.... nothing... second guy tries.... nothing.... they recruit some rather large service guy..... he is trying his best and nothing..... so there are 4 service guys all around my car and no one can do it. They are all saying the same thing, pulling, and nuttin!

Then one guy, make that service man number 5, and while we are all laughing because this guy doesnt look very, err, muscular, he yanks the damn thing off. So in answer to the questions, I can categorically confirm you do have to yank it off. Thats even on the new versions. But it seems some knobs are harder to pull than others (isnt that always the case!).

The only thing I noticed, is the guy was successful by pulling it from the passenger seat side. Everyone else had tried from the drivers seat. Does it make a difference in general, probably not, but it worked for me! Happy pulling folks!

PS - The gear box feels so much better since I put the M shift knob in. It's almost like a new car!

I got mine off by putting it in 2nd and pulling up but I used my legs against the floor board and kind of did a squat/pull and it came flying off and almost hit my self in the head.

I had several attempts to get the gear knob off over two days. My last attempt I got a very good grip of it and pulled and maintained the pressure (rather than yanking it off) and suddenly it came off. Car was only three weeks old and there was no glue.
Now I've got a burr walnut gear knob to go with the car's trim and a matching handbrake lever.

Also remember not to twist the knob when you remove it - pull it straight up. There is a notch at the top of the knob and you can break/crack it if you try to twist the knob as you pull it up.

That thread helped a lot.

Just as an aside, the stock shift knob was murder to take out. I had to hold it like a baseball bat, just upside down, and pull on it hard. The replacement M-sport knob is nice, but I pulled mine off at the racetrack... twice

This sure is an old post. I finally replaced my stock E90 6MT shift knob for an E46 M knob. I had to use my knee as leverage to push up on my arm that was holding the knob to pull it off, but it wasn't really very difficult. After a certain amount of pressure, it just released and pulled right off. The new knob it MUCH better. It's shorter and the knob is rounder so it doesn't bother my hand like the not-so-round with edges E90 stock knob was. It's weighted more so than the stock knob and shifts into the gears very nicely. It also looks very nice and matches the rest of the interior very well. I only paid $60 through Tischer BMW online with free shipping and no tax. You can't beat it, if you're considering a new shift knob to improve the performance and feel of your manual shifting.

Nice shifter, but we don't have M's. Anyway to change the pattern on the knob so it does not have it?
