Private plate question which is irritating me

im selling me old e36. Not advertised it once but the neighbour is interested, which is handy.

It has a private plate i want to keep T15 *** but the car was originally registered with this palte and it does not have any other plate?

what will happen and what on plate will go on it?

im confused, its not like it had T657GHF but then i changed it to T15*** we registered the car when we bought it brand new with this private plate?

I think if you put T15*** on retention you'll just get issued with any old TnnnXXX plate (i.e. right dated T reg) from the system for the E36 when you re-register it.

Carlos, I think ajd is correct, you'll get a 'T' plate available from the range at the time the car was first registered. DVLA will tie in the VIN themselves on their system and the V5 will need updating, not sure about the MOT. Check their website for details and COST. You can also choose from their available range by doing searches on the relevant part of the website. They answer the phone as well!!

I think you will have to put the plate on retention with your local licencing office and then apply to re-register the car. You will need to take all the documents with you. I am pretty sure to re-register a vehicle it must be road worthy so is it MOT'd? If not you may have to get this done before you re-register rather than before you sell.

The dvla office will issue you with there next available 'age related' plate which will have the same prefix as the original (ie a T reg)

The V5 will then arrive back correctly registered - a note will be made that the car is re-registered and if anybody HPi checks the vehicle this will be notified then.

Also if you do have to MOT before re-registration, be sure to return back to the MOT centre to get it stamped as re-registered otherwise the MOT will show the old 'private' reg plate.

I think it costs 80 to put a plate on retention and then another 80 to re register again.

Not 100% sure how accurate all that is and things may have changed!!

the car is currently Mot'd so that one isnt an issue

I'm kinda guessing an explanation of what has occured will suffice Carlos, if a potential purchaser has any concerns with you as a second hand car dealer, it will be easy for them to get your story verified.

Actually thinking about it, they (any purchaser) probably will have concerns

It shouldn't be an issue Carlos. The LVLO or DVLA will stamp the MOT with the new registration, the old registration will still be on it (well that's what they did with my bike) so you will have continuity between the old and new registrations.

Regards

Chris

oh right, so it wont cause any issues for the new owner when he may come to sell in a few years? the tied in MOT will prove all the others are legit.

Only thing is he wants to buy it Tomorrow, (touchwood if all goes well with his friend giving her the once over) so how will i get the plate then?

You can do it all by post, I do quite a few a week.!!

Go to; http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring...tes/DG_4022576

and print the form off, then send the form, correctly completed with your valid MOT certificate, signed log book and details of your tax disc - serial number and expiry date, to your local dvla office, with a cheque for £105 which covers the retention and the transfer fee onto your new vehicle, in the next 12 months. If you do not transfer it in 12 months you will have to pay another £25(i think) to update the retention certificate.

After a week or so, you will get a new registration number, a document to allow to to have the plates made up, a new tax disc, and the green slip off the V5 with the new plate stamped and manually entered on it. You will have to send your old tax disc back in the envelope providied. After 4-6 weeks you will receive your new log book with the new number on it. On an HPi check it will come up with the history of number plates and when the they were on the car.

Remember if you want to transfer the plate into someone else's name other than the owner on the logbook, you will have to enter their details as the nominee

When you want to put the plate on yor 'new' car it is a similar system, but they can do it while you wait at the DVLA office rather than waiting 7 days for the post etc - You will need to be the registered keeper of the vehicle that the plate is going onto or it has to be sent off to the DVLA in Cardiff, and takes approx 3-4 weeks!

Hope that clears this up

He can take the car on the old plate and once updated you can transfer it all over to him - Do not transfer the car into his name until the plate is off
