Help! Excessive deposit request or fair call???

Hey all.

Looking for a quick response. While i received a great deal on the 335 TiAg coupe. I need to put a deposit down tomorrow morning. They are requesting $8K!!!! I don't mind putting a few grand down but 8!

They then hold that (as security fair enough) until the vehicle arrives (3-4 months!) collecting interest of course, then credit it against the vehicle price. They claim it is to cover stamp duty etc - I am sure they do not have to pay the stamp duty until the car is delivered.

I need to finance the FULL amount of the car to gain the highest tax efectiveness against interest and depreciation so I want to hand over as little as possible.

So the question is - What have you guys put down as a deposit????

$8k seems too much for me.
I was $2k with visa credit card. Give them $8k with your visa credit card = 55days interest free.

but i think, they wont accept credit card for $8k

I didn't pay any deposit. Then I drove one of their cars for 4 months before they delivered mine!

Could have paid $2k, but decided to pay $5k so that I could pressure AMEX into waiving my annual fee due to my high spend.

Worked as well

Today brought a new Subaru for my daily driver and only a $1k deposit

Maximum i've ever given was $1K and I insist on that if they want the deal. A customer of mine has a deposit down on the new M3 with M-DCT coming out in the middle of the year and he was only asked for $1K. I suppose that every dealership has their own standards but i'm sure it's negotiable.

Excessive, I wrote a cheque for $5k when I placed the order for my 335 and just gave them my credit card number for the M Coupe which was enough to do the deal until the paper work was ready for exchange.

I paid $0 at Adelaide Motors.

This was quite good seeing as I had specced a 325i manual, which would have been pretty hard to off-load if I had of welched.

$10K on a new model M3 is a bit rude. It's not like they couldn't sell that car if you backed out. $10K or more on an M5 or M6 I can understand as buyers a little thinner on the ground for those models.
