I'm scared :( got a 320 coming

It seems like everyone has a complaint about the 320 engines on E9X, i'm expecting mine in just little over a month and i am really scared BMW QA for this engine and their other E92s in general seem to be incredibly poor due to all the complaints i keep reading on here!!

Are there any 320 E92 drivers on here that haven't had a problem yet?

if your geting petrol then im afraid you should be worried.

Ive now swapped to the 320d and its much better, the i was off the road more than it was on.

But they do know the problems and they are fixable so thats good

it is a petrol damn!

But if they know the problems already, can't bmw make sure they are addressed during the initial build??? Or do they inexplicably prefer sell faulty cars and have customers coming back for repairs?

Can I just say, that although I had one minor matter with the engine knocking (only once), and apart from the petrol engine sounding a bit like a tractor when cold, I have had no trouble with mine.

I've covered over 10k miles in 4 months so far. Mine's a Sept 57 model.

But then again, it's early days...

regards

I wonder if the new 320i shares technology taken from the si as the official bhp is very similar. Maybe BMW used the si (not the actual WTCC car engine) as a test bed for developing the new 320i.

Maybe Tony can shed some light on what is shared between the si and the i (new version).

Mine is an Oct 07 build 320i e92. For the first few hundred miles the engine would stutter a little under 2k rpm, but now at 1500 miles on the clock the engine is smooth, and quite potent at times. Fuel economy is ok too.

I got all worried about getting a 320i after reading the messages on this forum, but to be honest you could find people with problems on any of the engines, from the 320d to the 335. Things break.

You'll love the car when it arrives!

RDG that is a cracking looking car. Those 19s look so much better than my 18s. Congrats - hope the new car is better.

RDG, Did the dealer fit the lowering springs or did you get them donw elsewhere... Also, have you have all 4 or just the front? That's the only complaint I have about the look of my e92... there's just too much gap around the front arches for my liking!!

Too many of the 320's break for my liking but it seems to be the first batch of cars that are affected... anything 57 plate seems to be ok
I've just run mine dry & now filled it up with VPower incase that helps, at 67 a time I don't think I'll be doing it often though lol

What are these 320 problems? I was thinking of buying a 320i, maybe late 2006 or early 2007.

I take it the problems no longer exist if you get one of the new Efficient Dynamics models?

No, the 320si engine and the standard 320i engine are very very different.

The 320si engine is designated the N45B20S and is a 1997cc unit with an 88mm/85mm Stroke/Bore delivering 173PS and 147lbft torque. The compression ratio is higher at 11:1. This engine does NOT have the Valvetronic system installed as the decreased number of moving parts in the head allow the redline to be moved higher to 7300rpm. This special engine is also largely hand-built and blueprinted for tolerance.

(interestingly, it is actually a development of the 1.6L engine found in the 116i)

The new 320i engine with the Efficient Dynamics package is designated the N46B20ED, with 170PS and 155lbft torque, redlined at 7000rpm, and uses the Valvetronic system. The stroke/bore dimensions are slightly different at 90mm/84mm respectively, and the engine now uses direct fuel injection with piezo-injectors, at 200bar pressure. The compression ratio is also higher at 12:1
