I live in Boulder Colorado and was wondering if anyone with a 335i who lives close has had any problems with snow and their rwd. Snow tires still arent enough or what?

Snow tires should be fine. Sometimes I have problems with clearance though.

It sucks, don't get a rwd. I have 325i the car is useless in the snow.

I bought a 335i coupe last Friday from Co's BMW in Loveland. Had them put the 17" wheels and blizzak snow tires on...haven't had any problems in the past week of snow we have had

I live in Aurora CO and am using Michelin PA Alpins 225/40 18" on e92. Ground clearance would be the only problem so I use the truck when it get real bad. On ice and hard pack it is awesome.

+1 on the Michelin Alpins, 225/40 18s on E92. Probably not the best snow tire, but I have had no problems this winter. Love them in the dry which it is 95% of the time.

I live on the other side of the mountains in Utah and I have no problems getting around in my 335i. Get a good set of snow tires and you are good to go.

My 335i with sport sucks in the snow. But thats ok because I have a truck for snow days so this is not my daily driver. If it was my only car I would have deffinately got the xi. But is not so I love my 335i!

+1 that's exactly my reasoning for the "i" vs. the "xi".

I have my old '94 E34 'beater' that I drive around during the winter. The paint is in horrible shape, but mechanically its good, and with my Dunlop wintersport M3's on it, its is pretty much bullet proof in the snow. When I want to have fun I just pop off the traction control and go for a ride!

I grew up in Colorado driving Ford Mustangs - you will do fine if you use a good snow tire. One year I even had studs, but I would not do that again.

I would also add that my 335xi with summer tires does pretty bad when it gets slippery. It will only get worse with mods, so I have abackup SUV.

Get some good snow tires, and you'll be fine. I had a 1995 318ti with an open diff. Even that worked relatively well with good snow's. Once I put in an LSD it became great - about as good as some SUVs on all-seasons... as long as the snow was less than 6 inches.

The 328xi with M3's is wayyy better, but that's an unfair comparison.

Good snow tires will get you through. Seems kinda crazy to me to drive an Xi for the 355 days per year that you are on dry pavement! The guys at TireSource will get you setup properly for winter!

Remember the good old days before AWD/ASC/DSC/etc???

+1 , thats exactly what I think too.

I've only got RWD, and I get by just fine...my old '94 530i is a beast, and can get me through just about anything with the Dunlop Wintersport M3's on it.

I live in Denver. I'm on my second 3 series RWD in 9 years. Daily driver with snows on all fours in winter (Dunlop Winter sports). They work great. Like others say...ground clearance can be an issue. I've literally driven every day in the 9 years ...except one (37 inches of snow. I've been stuck only once, during that same storm...in front of my house...due to clearance). I ski 10-20times per year...and the car is just fine.

Friends have AWD. AWD seems to have better traction when starting off...but that is it.

I agree with you Rover. I grew up here driving Mustangs and Pintos. As long as you have good snowtires you will be fine. The reason I won't drive my xi in the winter is that it has summer high performance treads and is lowered a few inches.

(plus, the extra torque makes getting started on slick roads very difficult.)

I put Goodyear Ultra Grip Performance winter tires on my 330i SP (225/40R18) earlier this year. They have been great so far in the snow - my only concern is exactly what has been stated above - ground clearance. So if there is more than 4-6" of snow on the ground, I typically take the wife's car (LR3 - we can drive through anything in it ).

BTW - the key learning for me (over my E46) was to turn off DTC on hills. I had a tough time making it up our driveway (pretty steep incline) with a coating of ice and DTC on. Turning it off made a huge difference, so now I drive around in the snow with DTC off (makes it a little more fun too ).

I will say - if I didn't live in the mountains, I'd go with RWD and some kickin' snow tires. However, in the mountains the AWD + snowtire combo gives you peace-of-mind. Now if only all the AS-ers (all season) could get out of the way...
