Not exactly rev matching but maybe he's not giving it any throttle.

Who waits for the RPMS to drop before shifting? I think you are a noob and were never properly taught how to drive a manual tranny. The clutch and accelerator pedal should be moving in opposite directions...down on the clutch/up off the accelerator...up off the clutch/down on the accelerator. There is no need to wait for anything when you are up shifting as long as your footwork is in sync.

Being a noob is nothing to be ashamed of and I do respect those who want to learn. Posting on a forum where you potentially get flamed like this deserves more respect. But I agree that he probably needs to drive with someone experienced or view some of the videos posted here.

I will post more info when I get access to computer and can pw

Aright man its not like you were born knowing how to drive a stick. Im talking about me trying to make a smooth shift from 1st to 2nd while gunning it. Whenever i redline in 1st then change to 2nd, i keep my foot pressed on the clutch until the RPM drops to like 5000, and then i let off the clutch and get a very smooth shift. But that also takes forever and isnt really fast. I guess whenever i shift from 1st to 2nd, i have to quickly let of the clutch and catch it at the end with the throttle.

Why would you red line in 1st, or according to these diagrams, in any gear for that matter?

I can only derive your "point" from your posts. I'm not a mind reader and can only take what I read at face value. If you're redlining before you shift, that may be part of your problem.

You came on this forum for help and we can only give it if the information we're supplied with is accurate. Good luck to you and since your car is obviously a leased vehicle, good luck to the next owner as well.

Well, if you shift at redline, you start off higher in the rev range in the next gear. So, for all practical purposes, it might be faster.

OK, guys.. two things continue to bedevil me:

1. How can I get smoother downshifts? Yes, I'm replacing the CDV soon, but it can't just be the CDV.

2. I'm still slow off the line. Tried what you guys recommended. The car seems to jerk if I depress the clutch with the throttle still on. What do you do to get a decent takeoff? Keep in mind, I'm not talking about a drag race, I'm talking about not driving like a grandma at a stoplight. There are literally grandmas in the next lane who beat me off the line.

1. rev match, rev match, rev match. your shifts will be seamless

2. dump or feather clutch... if dump do it at like 1500-2500 rpm

Go out for a drive on bizzy streets that you know will have a lot of red lights. Drive around for 30 - 40 minutes and you'll feel when the clutch engages. Then you will start taking off quicker on your own without even noticing.

About the downshifts. 3rd to 2nd was the most challenging for me and don't try to downshift from 2nd to 1st because you don't need to. Go on a highway and pay attention to what RPM you shift from 3rd to 4th. Once you do that remeber the RPM you should be at in 3rd gear. To downshift, hit the clutch, go to 3rd while raising the RPMs to the right amount and let off the clutch... not too quick though. This way you will have seamless downshifts and soon you wont look at your techometer and you will feel this too. I dont think you need to modify your CDV, just adapt to it and youll be fine. Its not as bad as everyone says it is.

just curious, what gear do most of you have your car in while driving 70+ on the freeway with no traffic? Since I haven't gotten my car yet, I am only guessing that being in 4th gear would be enough? ..

6th, new to 6mt? i can help you out if you're in irvine, PM me... congrats in advance on your car.

you can go 4th, you can go 3rd if you want and run the car at 6500 RPM, but you should use over drive gears (5th, 6th)
