Polluting cars to pay 25 for Congestion Charge!

Evening all,

Just read in the news about the new 25 per day charge for cars producing over 225 grams of CO2/km, if you want to drive into or through Central London!

"The 25 charge will apply to vehicles emitting more than 225 grams of CO2/km (g/k), as well as those registered before March 2001 which have engines larger than 3,000cc" (BBC)

Thankfully, all 3-Series engines produce less than the specified 225g/km CO2. With the most polluting being the 335i at 218g/km.
Unfortunately, the new M3 is not so lucky, producing 290g/km of CO2...

This may seem a bit anal for entering London, but, and I quote,
"Those vehicles getting a 100% discount will emit less than 120g/km."

I'm guessing this means that those cars meeting the above requirement can drive into central london for free!?
The 320d produces 128g/km... smells funny, or coincidence?

This new rule will be enforced from 27th Oct.

Will this really make some headway for cleaning up London, or is this another tiresome money-making scheme?

Any thoughts, comments, or suggestions?

Yet another tax based on unproven and contradictory evidence.
125.00 pw to drive in Central London where the CC charge has made little or no effect on congestion at all,is nothing more then daylight robbery.

comments
Will not hit the rich, just those that are already struggling to get to work using their car that is already taxed, taxed, taxed and now taxed all over again.
Public Transport sucks in London and those that think otherwise obviously have no real experience of what getting around in the cess pit that London is rapidly becoming is all about.

suggestions

Have a Mayor that is not so anti car and is more realistic about the real problems people face in getting in and around London.

Shoot Ken Livingstone.

It's funny that currently 17% of cars entering the congestion charge area fall into the new higher charge group where as only 2% qualify for exemtion. Just another money making scam hitting the soft target motorist.

The underlying fallacy in congestion charging schemes is the notion that people entering the zone are doing so due to true choice. In reality, there is no choice as public transport is lamentably abysmal so people are compelled to use cars.

The goverment/ken livingstone must also believe that people just drive around in cars aimlessly or for pure fun 8am in the morning. And that therefore, if this apprent privilege is restricted or withdrawn, people will not really suffer. Perhaps they need reminding we are actaully going to work to generate the taxes which they thrive upon like blood thirsty parasites!!

As you guys and girls may have realised, I am vehemently opposed to excessive taxation on motorists

Only recently did the government introduce that charge for over-polluting large commercial vehicles entering London, some 200 per day! Seeing as this charge does affect only a small niche group of vehicles, I don't really see the great benefit it will bring to london's environment.

I see London as having a grave problem on their hands. They are trying to lead in the fight against pollution. I have no issue with this whatsoever, but I do have an issue with the alternatives good ol' Ken has left us with; PUBLIC TRANSPORT...? Not only is it so expensive that it offers very little financial benefit over using your car, but its shite, if you compare it to the transport of our fellow Europeans across the pond.

How can London expect to lead by example if they are not even willing to learn by example?

Shoot Ken Livingstone? Get in line I say!

....And also the thousands of cars that used to pay 8 quid and now get in free will now be driven into work so the actual number of vehicles being driven into the congestion zone will probably increase and not decrease!!!
