BMW PE w/ catless dp drone
Does anyone with BMW PE and catless dp experience bad in cabin drone?
I recently installed a catless dp and with my stock exhaust, it sounded great. Not too loud but still able to hear much more exhaust note when you get on it. Then I installed the BMW PE and this is when the drone started. The first day was perfectly fine.. exhaust note was very clean and crisp and in cabin noise was almost non-existent as well. However when I started driving the very next day, in cabin drone came out of nowhere and now it's making me think about taking the catless dp off. I purchased my BMW PE through the fire sale that BMW recently had so I do not want to remove and sell. I do have an e90 A/T so I expected some in cabin noise on low rpms but never to this extent. I checked all the connections and clamps multiple times and had a shop check it as well but no luck in fixing the drone. Any ideas on what else I can do? |

Lol I have the exact problem. Anything below 2k rpm is horrible and going up gradients is unbearable. It's funny because cruising on the highway is not bad at all. At first I thought exhaust gas was leaking through the clamps but I double checked everything and retightened it all to no avail.

I am in the same boat, got the huge deal on PE exhaust, installed it and I love the sound. I had previously bought vrsf DP but never had the chance to install it.
PE exhaust only on rwd (no resonnators in midpipes) is pretty loud but I'd like to get the performance benefits of the downpipe. Don't know what to do... |

I think the best bet for you would be to swap the midpipes for those with resonnators (xi).
Maybe someone with an xi would want to have a little more noise and be willing to swap for your straight ones? |

I thought about that too but I'm in Texas so finding an "xi" here is quite difficult. I even thought about finding N54 midpipe as well but at this point I might just get rid of the catless dp.

Get the midpipe, you won't regret it. I have an xi, and paired up with the PE and catless DP....it's amazing.

I actually have the same setup as you, and IMO it's too loud. I had a IS300 NA with no cats, straight through pipes, to an HKS exhaust. Now that droned a lot. My current setup doesn't drone too badly, but is terribly loud upon cold start.

Last night I removed one of the clamps to see if it was aligned correctly and to my surprise, two pipes were not aligning very well so maybe that's causing a leak and producing more sound??
Did any of you have a shop weld all those connections together so you're not using the clamps? I would think over time, clamps will loosen and cause leaks. |

You can always just add some resonators to the exhaust you already have. A muffler shop will be able to do that no problem. Vibrant ones are popular for other makes and are a decent price.

I was looking into the same resonators. Apparently, they do help a lot with rasp, and somewhat with drone, as well. As I have a X-drive, I already have secondary cats. Not sure where the resonators would fit/be a good location to install. |
