Hi all
If your N55 is out of warranty you need to have this issue checked and updated. This is very important as it could cost you many thousands of dollars to sort out WHEN it fails.

THIS IS A TICKING TIME BOMB.

Is this related to the recall for the vanos bolts?

Yes it is John.
The problem is that there are a lot of N55 now out of warranty, this is a super big issue and super big cost wise to repair out of warranty, as BMW will replace the Vanos hubs at around $650.00 each + gaskets + labour Total around $2200.00 as a preventative maintenance repair.

But as a failure repair i can see costs running towards $4,000-$5,000 depends on the damage

We do have the bolts in stock to do preventive maintenance, they are not OEM as BMW don't sell the bolts as a part, you have to purchase the complete Vanos hub.

Our bolts are a special order high tensile item, we can sell the bolts for the DIY guys @ $5.00 each if that helps.

Friend of mine had this happen out of warranty
Engine was a write off

Porsche boxsters have a similar time bomb (IBS)
When the bearing goes, a dozen small ball bearing end up bouncing around the inside of the engine causing massive damage

With the millions in development BMW and Porsche shouldnt have $5 parts fail and cause catastrophic failure

If it's related to the bolt recall then BMW will cover damages regardless if you are under warranty or not; at least in the US. Went to the dealer to have that done back in October and they found that one had broken off. They wound up taking apart the motor and oil pan. No damage was done to the engine but pieces of the bolt where stuck in the pan so the pan got replaced.
