VIC - Winton Raceway Fun Day Nov 29th

Crossposted on 1addicts:

The next Winton fun day is coming up on November 29th:

http://www.wintonraceway.com.au/drive/fun-days
http://www.wintonraceway.com.au/wp-c...Questions1.pdf

Will be good to see some other BMWs there. I went last time in July and even with heavy rain I had a lot of fun.

The day only costs $50 for driver or passenger and is organized in 30 minute sessions alternating between driver and driver+passenger sessions.

Notes:
- You need a helmet, get one with the AS1698 sticker. I bought a motorbike helmet as they are much cheaper than motorsport helmets.
- You need long sleeve shirt, pants(not shorts) and enclosed footwear. No flammable clothing (cotton preferred)
- No need for cams license
- No need for fire extinguisher
- If you have an N54 engine, make sure all the maintenance is up to date, weak stuff WILL break at the track! If in doubt, try a more conservative map to avoid overheating.

Make sure you fill up on petrol on the Hume at one of the big petrol stations, a lot of the rural stations don't carry 98 or E85. I would probably skip E85 mixing as it is a long drive and you don't really need more power on a tight track like Winton.

Note your insurance won't cover you on these days but as long as you don't drive like a dickhead you should be fine. Just overtake on the straights when it is safe, and keep a safe distance when following someone who doesn't know what they're doing. If its your first time, just concentrate on learning the track and taking the ideal racing line, don't be a hero and go all out.

If there is enough interest we can maybe meet up north of Melbourne and drive up to Winton together. It is around a 2.5 hour drive from Melbourne on the Hume. It is a good idea to go early if you want to score a good parking spot in the covered areas and set up a garage. If we go as a group then it would be good to bring a set of tools/jack/refreshments etc. Maybe meet up in Northcote at 6:00am and drive up to Winton together?

Post your interest here if you are keen

Meet at Coles Express Dalton Road Thomastown at 5:45AM for a strict 6AM start. If you are late, just meet up at Winton

Sounds interesting... and very well priced. Every other track day closer to Melbourne is $250-300, has Winton always been this cheap or is this particular type of track day priced in this way?

By the way not complaining, its cheap lol..

Its a beginners day. Not timed. That is why its cheap. But you get heaps of track time so its fantastic value.

Cool - thanks for clarifying Harms. Agree - very good value. Calder Park dragways (1/4 mile runs on Fri nights) are $75 for comparison.

I will attend if I sort everything out with my car

"sorting out" an n54 is a never ending task, which I also hope to get to someday

hahahaha true buddy. i got my p30ff code sorted by replacing the boost solenoids as recommended by some you guys.

Recently had what seemed as though was slightly slow sticky shifting when reving past 6000rpm (not sure if i described it right). After a trans adaptation reset and also driver adaptation reset it still didnt feel 100%. I spoke to Wedge as im running their 98 map and with the latest revision of their tune seems to have solved it, well it felt pretty sharp and crisp when I tried it last night.

Next looking into handling mods - was gona go with coilovers but then realised the daily comfort will be compromised.

So next option is to just put stiffer springs (eibach or h&r, already have the m-sport setup) with some koni yellows or bilstien

Ooops sorry vtl for highjacking thread, kind of realised after i wrote the thread

Another few notes I forgot to mention:

- Stock brake pads will begin to fade after around 2-3 hot laps on a dry, clear track. Better, more track ready pads should help this.
- Cooling might be an issue on some cars. If you insist on running aggressive tunes you will probably run into very high temps. Might want to invest in an additional oil cooler or better ducting (deleting fogs)
- Bring your factory tow hook and fit it before going through scrutineering. If you spin off the track and need to get recovered it will stop them from having to hook onto your control arms and potentially damaging them
- Might want to think about a mount for a camera if you want some cool footage. It's good to review yourself afterwards and you have a chance to improve. I made a custom mount that clamps onto the headrest. Works well with a Xiaomi Yi action camera. The 1080p image quality is pretty good and its less than $100. Audio recording quality sucks though. Can post pics of the setup if people are interested.

Rear tyres are getting bald so I got a lightly used set of Yokohama AD08-Rs in staggered fitment off the forums. Will be good to give them a workout on the track!

I'm out guys. I still haven't sorted out my oscillating throttle problem. Given my stft's and afr's are all over the place I don't think flogging around a track is wise.
