Mario K: Fully Custom Interior Build Thread
Ever since I bought my car in 2010 I wasn't sold on the black interior. At the time it was a deal I couldn't refuse so I pulled the trigger regardless.
A few months back I finally retired the E90 from a daily driver and bought an E70, so I decided to take on this project I've been putting off for almost 6 years. Here is what has been or will be done to the interior: -Painted black dash -Dyed black carpet -All plastic pieces painted black -All fabric pieces re-upholstered in black alcantara -Headliner re-upholstered in black alcantara with red diamond stitching & sunroof delete -Visors re-upholstered in black alcantara -Front and Rear Seats re-upholstered in red leather with black diamond stitching -Black door panels with red leather centers -Black front seat backs Here are the brand new Bride seats. This is the first prototype, and will be available to the general public after Sema 2017. FAA approved! A few of the many pieces that need to painted/ re-upholstered Prepping and Painting the dash. I deep cleaned it, sprayed it with 3 coats of Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter followed by 4 coats of Dupli-Color Flat Black Vinyl and Fabric Paint Hydro-dipped trim back in Headliner dropped, and you can see I started dyeing the carpet UPDATE 12/5/2015: With this 74 degree and sunny Arizona weather, I decided today would be a perfect day to paint all the plastic pieces. I started off by thoroughly cleaning all the pieces, followed by Dupli-Color Adhesion Promoter and once again Dupli-Color Flat Black Vinyl and Fabric Paint. Very happy with the end results, every piece has came out flawlessly with a natural look. Tomorrow I'll be finishing up the carpet and putting most of the plastic pieces back in. UPDATE 1/11/2016: This project didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped. The first shop that did my headliner decided that it would be a smart idea to use white-out on my original receipt and add upwards of $1000 worth of charges even though I saved my original receipt lol. I don't know how that played out in their minds but needless to say after threatening with a BBB report and to sue for fraudulently altering a receipt; they rightfully accepted their wrongs. Apart from that mess, the headliner came out great and I decided to cover the sunroof for a cleaner uninterrupted look. Now I was on the lookout for another shop to take on the project as the seats weren't completed yet. A few different upholstery shops couldn't get the pre-made seat covers to fit just right so I decided to scrap the entire project and start fresh. I met a guy who specializes in boat tops and he agreed to take on this project for me. We added extra cushioning to the seats and they are extremely comfortable now. They came out great and I'm very happy with the results, now to get the rear seats and door panels finished up!

wow. what a crazy project to tackle yourself. keep us updated. curious to see how the red interior with black looks! The hydrodipped carbon may have some haters but i think it looks great. still think you should go back to montego blue. I also noticed you dont have any fender liners on the front, could you not get the stock ones back in with the custom bumper? seems they could help, no?

The hydro-dipped trim looks pretty nice actually! I bet that wasnt cheap! (Still cheaper than buying real CF im sure). Keep up the good work man!

No matter how quiet you are here, it's always a guarantee you're in hiding doing something completely awesome. Can't wait to see how this turns out man, and good luck!

as others have said...looking forward to the final product. Great job on tackling this on yourself, and the dash came out really well (flawless from the pics)!

Looks great! I used the same process in a e36 dash years ago. It came out great and lasted the 4 years I drove the car. How are you doing the carpet? I used the duplicator stuff on the carpet but it didn't hold up well. Wound up using ritt dye and it was much better, just a longer process.

Looks great man!
Take lots of pictures of the progress, and of how you removed the carpet, I might be interested in replacing mine in the future.

The ritt fabric dye works really well. Mix it with water in a spray bottle. It takes some time between coats to let the carpet dry. But it actually dyes the carpet instead of putting a layer of black paint on the carpet.

Attachment 1327140 Love that seat.... Great job. Gutted my 07 e93. Painted and dyed interior parts. A lot of work but at the end you can proudly say that you did the work. Do your front seats have the lumbar and bolsters? Reason I ask is I would be interested if you have any issues after they are installed back into the car. My lumbar and bolsters stopped working after I installed them back into the car. |
