VXR half day on the track for 95

Just seen this does anyone fancy this for a fun morning/afternoon out driving VXR Vauxhalls?

Thruxton is my 1st choice but I would do Brands Indy. All dates seem to be midweek.

http://www.vauxhall.co.uk/vx/microsi..._trackday.html

Cheap spin on a track in someone else's car.

Carl,

I have just booked Brands Tuesday 20th May afternoon session 12 - 5pm.

You need driving licence number when you book.

Not bad for 95 - It looks like its Corsa's or Astra's can't tell.

I did a Formula Audi one at Oulton Park some time back.
All paid for by my company - Managed to get onto a jolly

We did outdoor go karting then moved onto Audi TT's then onto a single seater Formula Audi race cars.

Tomorrow while you boys and girls are having a fun day at work spare a thought for poor me driving round Brands and doing auto tests with Paul Swift.

Role on tomorrow.

Yeah cheers Peter - I'll be thinking of you whilst sitting in an office, bored, staring out of the window watching the real world go by.

Seriously, have a great time and let us know how you get on.

It was a fantastic day at Brand's today, great weather and plenty of cars to play in.

Started with Paul Swift and his team doing Autotests which were a couple of courses of slalom, garage, reversing and 360's round cones. Plenty of handbrake, smoke and burning rubber. The Astra's were hammered more than an Avis rentacar.

Then Paul Swift took us for the 2 wheel experience where he drives one side of the car up a ramp and then runs in on 2 wheels for about 50metres. This is unreal and it's amazing how high up you are in the passanger seat. Bloody strange experience to say the least. Then Paul did a demo burning up and down and handbraking round cars (fowards and backwards) unbelievable he went into reverse 360s at speed and just missed parked cars by less than a foot. The guy is off his box.

Next off to the track and got the opportunity to drive the whole VXR range for about 1 hour45mins. A lot of fun and I have done track days in the past but I would say a great introduction to anyone who has not done it before. Easy to drive cars, instructors at all times and braking points all marked, etc.

So what about the VXR cars.

Corsa - a good fun small hot hatch and really great in the corners with good mid range grunt. I would love to have one of these as a weekend toy in the garage.

Astra- Quickest for lapping the Indy circuit. When you push hard there is torque steer but it 240bhp through the front wheels so no surprise. Well inpressed by how it goes a good solid hot hatch.

Zafira, Meriva - not my type of car but more impressed with the meriva as it could still be thrown round the track.

Vectra- Better than I thought it would be not a 3 series but not a million miles away either.

VXR8 - 430bhp cheap M5 type car. It was really quick down the straights - no surprise but round the corners it was easy to keep up in the Astra. Would be much better on a more open circuit where you could use the power more.

One of the best bits of the day was a 2 lap passanger ride with ex touring cars driver Paul O'Neil in a new Astra Nuremberg edition. This was unreal and going round Graham Hill Bend sideways drifting at 90mph with him left foot braking to get the car well out of shape will stay with me for a long time. What a driver -he is a nutter.

Anyway I will do it next year. It's 95 and a bargin. The marketing manager told me it's costs them 450 a head to put on.

A few pics

Glad you had a good time Pete.

Now you know how to do the '2 wheeled trick', you could demonstrate it to me at Goodwood, in your car!

Pull it off, brekkers is on me
Fail, and I'll tow you, assuming the wheels still turn

Sounds like a major bargain. I can well imagine it costs them that sort of money.

How were the instructors? Did they encourage you to push to the limit or not?

I jumped in about 10 different cars in the day with the instructor staying with each car. Most were pushing to the limit and were not bothered how fast you went although in the VXR8 down the mainstraight I got some good speed up and the guy was brake, Brake, BRAKE for Graham Hill Bend as I got it a bit out of shape on the entry. In the early laps they were helping you get the racing line and braking points right and then it was more fine tuning of how you can get more speed out the lap and using all the circuit. They let you overtake at will on the straights but on the left as per usual.

Paul O'Neil is currently racing in the British GT Series. He just took every corner out of shape to drifting just for fun. A real buzz but also shows how rubbish I am.

Glad you had a great time Peter. Looks really good fun.

Suppose you learn alot about car control on those sort of track days as well as thrashing the arse off a car other than your own. Excellent.
