Michelin PS2 ZP - got screwed on Ebay

I recently bought a set of Michelin PS2 Runflats off Ebay. The set had '50 miles' on them but one of the rears has a chunk missing from the tread. I have already contacted the seller and I am waiting for a reply. The object in the picture is a penny for scale purposes, and the depth of the 'pit' is about .4 of an inch.

I just want to know if this compromises the tire at all?

Thanks in advance.

bump . . someone on here must have enough 'tire experience' to know if this is an issue?

Did they try to hide the defect with a sticker?

IMO, they will be just fine. I've raced on tires with all kinds of crazy levels of treadwear, and I don't think you'll notice any difference with that chunk missing. I would be careful to inspect the rest of the tires for any other defects, however, especially any poorly installed patch jobs.

No, it was not hidden with a sticker, the black band is from the shipping tape.

I have consulted 2 tire dealers and all say it will be fine, but these are mainstream tire dealers that typically deal with your average all season radials on the average family car. I have not found a performance tire dealer around this area that could probably give me better advice.

There are no patch jobs on the tire, the only other issue is some semi-circular cuts elsewhere on the tire.

What really pisses me off is that the ebay auction listed them as 'new' with only 50 miles and made no mention of this damage. To further my frustration the seller has yet to respond to 2 of my emails asking for either a partial of full refund. This A-hole had to know the tires were in this condition when selling them and simply chose not to mention it! The auction was paypal guaranteed to only $200 so I hope at least I can get that amount back.

I considered just replacing this 1 tire; called tirerack and eventually Michelin directly. They have no tires in reserve and none are scheduled for production for at least 2-3 months!

Update:

Finally got an email back from the seller. He says that he did not notice any problem with the tires when they were removed. He claims they were on the car for 1 week (about 50 miles). He is refusing to issue a refund of any kind as he was selling these tires as used for 50 miles not new off the shelf (his auction page makes no mention of damage). I dont know about you guys, but the stock bridgestones look nothing like this after 15,000 miles of spirited driving.

My response was that I bought 4 tires, not 3.5. Seems sketchy to me. The sad part is this guy is a PhD who runs his own company down in Texas!!!

What do you guys think?
for those interested here is the auction link:

Is this BS or do you think its fair that I paid $1000 (new price of tires on TR is about $1280)? Remember these are the runflat versions.

no honor among bimmer owners I guess

Tirerack has none in stock. Called michelin directly, none in both stock OR reserve and they have NO plans for production for the next 2 months. The rep said thats as far as they can see for production, so his best guess would be late may for a production run. Crazy! I guess the only place in the world right now with this tire is the BMW factory!

you'll be fine, the hole from the missing chunk isn't near deep enough to do any damage to the tire. Just drive with it you'll be fine

Look at that pic! Seems that who ever bit out that chunk, almost did it just few inches to the left as well, but didnt go through enough. Curious.

Anyway, you can buy that new tyres just in case and keep driving for now. Youll be fine. When new tyre comes, just swap them and keep the eaten tyre for a spare. Chances are you might need spare at some stage sooner or later.

option two is try to sell them disclosing the issue and making small discount (smaller then it would have cost you to buy new tyre obviously). then once you get some money back, buy something else and not run flats. You'll be brake even I bet by the end. And ride will be nicer.

I would drive on it.

I however think you over paid for used tires. Chunk missing or not.

yeah, 1000 is a lot for used tires. However, I want to keep runflat capability on my car which means either these or the stock bridgestones. I was happy with the bridgestones, but had the PS2 on my last BMW and LOVED them. Like I said earlier they are sold out nationwide and will not be produced again for some time. I saw them on ebay and jumped on them.
