e92 320d exhaust trim

I was in the dealer yesterday and got to drool over the M3 3dr (new and 2nd hand) and 4dr, and an M5 Touring, but that's a different story.

I noticed that the e92 320d they had in had an exhaust trim on it - sort of a square ovalish shape, slightly satin finish.

I meant to ask about it, but forgot - does anyone know, is it standard? is it stainless? it appeared to be "lined" rather than a slip-over?

Thinking of fitting to a non-dpf e91 with a bit of chopping? What do you think?

I have the trim on my car. I think it's a slip over design and the 'lining' you refer to is the inside of the actual pipe (though I haven't examined it in any great detail).

Ref this trim, I know the chop job has been done on some of the downturned pipes with other trims, but TBH I wouldn't bother with this one. The satin finish looks crap and is impossible to get exhaust residue off, even with BMW-approved metal cleaner. Haven't tried an abrasive cloth yet but I fear that may destroy the surface and make the problem worse. It's also really susceptible to baked on road crap. And consider that mine is a petrol; a non-DPF diesel would be sootier.

I'm looking for a chrome trim to replace mine.

Hmmm. I not sure that I actually liked it, but I'd prefer a OE Stainless one over anything else.

I can't quite decide which shape I like best either...

There's plenty of OE Chrome slip on ones on Fleabay, suitable for DPF motors. But if I chop the down-turn off, the slip on won't slip on!

Bit more research methinks.

ok i maybe wrong here but the oval 320d pipe is due to the new efficient dynamics engine and DPF,163 PS to ED 177 PS, i will take a look how mine is attached and report back.

Yeah, you're right (nearly) the non-DPF 320D has a downturn, you could order a non-ED 320D with DPF and that came with the straight Oval rather than the downturn. I'm splitting hairs though.

I remember someone did this - chopped the downturn off and fitted a tip, but I can't find the thread. I think it was a blue M-Sport Saloon?

I have cut the exhaust snout of the wife's 320d touring and added the standard slip-on sleeve bought from ebay.

Ah, I knew someone had done it. That looks good.

So, looking at that other thread, that's a standard BMW chrome tip (for a dpf) and you've managed to cut the downturn off and leave enough oval to tack weld the tip on?

Edit: Just read your thread more carefully, I think it tells me everything.

Yep - Standard DPF sleeve.

I just cut enough off to let the chrome sleeve be pushed on. (with the help of a rubber mallet)
I then used the supplied screw to tighten the sleeve in place.

You may also need a spacer between the sleeve and original exhaust pipe to keep the sleeve level.

I'll have a look when it comes, but do you think there's enough of the original pipe to cut the end to match the tip? The end of the tip seems to be at an angle, but on your picturess there's a bit of a gap between the cut-off end and the inside edge of the tip...

The original exhaust will not come all the way up the sleeve but only about half way. This did not bother me as it still remained secure enough and also you cannot see this once a bit of soot sets in.

Another trick with the downturned exhaust is just to paint it black. Someone on the BMWLand forum has this and though it doesn't look as good as a chrome exhaust it is better than a dirty steel one.
