Question Staggered vs non staggered

I have a 335xi sedan and wondering what's the best wheel setup for my summer driving and occasional track driving. Many people are saying that that the staggered setup is just for appearance. Is there any advantage other than appearance on the staggered setup for my car?

Here is a list of disadvantage I've heard about Staggered Wheels:
-Staggered wheels cause understeer
-Non rotation of tires wears them out prematurely.
-Unsprung weight more having the rear wheels heavier.

Those are all valid cons to the staggered that mainly only affect your track day. Ultimately for track driving you should go with a 17" setup. It will be more responsive and the tires are cheaper. Average tires will last 4 or so track days and then they are toast.

To offset the the concerns of oversteer, which is probably the biggest con, suspension mods are necessary. Unfortunately, there are not any options that I know of for anti-sway bar upgrades. While others may disagree, stiffening up the front will make a huge difference with an AWD car. On both my Porsche and my old STI I went with a much stiffer front sway bar and it really helped reduce the understeer, by maintaining more of the front tires contact patch on hard turns.

Other than that, the look is nice with the staggered. Obviously it will help give you more traction in acceleration, but that really isn't an issue with the XI. Even so, my summer setup will be staggered.

Sorry to hijack this topic, but you mentioned 17" are better for tracking. Are there any [performance] advantages to 18" then, other than appearance?

No. Given the same rim, a 17" will always be lighter. 17" size tires are much less expensive than 18" although the price gap is getting closer these days.

id say that not being able to rotate them thus having rears thrown out too quickly is worst con of them all.
