Porter Cable question

Hi all

I just bought the Porter cable and have a few questions regarding to the pads and speed.

This is what I'm gonna do and use with PC.

1. wash the car with DAWN.
2. Dry
3. Apply and buff Z-PC
4. Apply and buff 1st coat of Z-5/ZFX
5. Reapply and buff 2nd coat of Z-5/ZFX
6. Apply Z-2 and let it haze for overnight
7. Buff Z-2.

in # 3~6, I don't know which color pad I should use with what speed.

I have orange, yellow, blue, black, and white pads and speed from 1~6.

can someone tell me which pad and speed I should use with which zaino product?

Thank you

Step 2.5 - clay.

I don't know that you need a second Z-5 coat. If you're doing multiple coats, one coat of Z-5 followed by one coat of Z-2 should be enough IMO. Also, I don't see the need to let Z-2 dry overnight. Zaino dries in like 20 minutes. By the time you're done putting it on, you can start taking it off.

For machine polishing with Z-PC, I assume you'd use a white pad and speed of 6 (see online videos about how to use your 7424 -- spread it around at speed 3, then increase to speed 6 to polish). For applying Z-5 or Z-2, you can either do it by hand or use a blue pad at speed 3.

Read this and Google for more like it: http://autopia.org/forum/detailing-p...-polisher.html

If it was me I would get some menzerna sip and 106ff use the sip with a orange pad and then finish with white pad with 106ff at speed 5-6 on both. This way you get the paint free of swirls and then apply the zaino very thin layers by hand for a beautiful shine.

Can you please tell me why you are using DAWN to wash your car? Do you know that Dawn is a detergent that takes away any lubrication your paint may have? If your are doing it for the first time to cleanse the paint of everything and then are going to use a shampoo specially formulated for car paint then ok, but if you use it on a regular basis then everytime you do, you will take off any waxes, sealants, etc that you have apllied before. Not Good

I only use Zaino car shampoo for the regular car wash.

Dawn is only for detailing. It removes much more grease, dirt, silicons, etc... than regular car shampoo.

If you read my post carefully you would notice that you are saying in your reply is implied . I was just making sure that you didnt use it on a regular basis in case you werent informed of its properties.

That being said am glad you dont do it and use it for detailing only.

On your original question, the Porter Cable 7424 is a dual action polisher, it mimics the movement of the human hand only much faster at up to 5 or 6000 orbits per minute (OPM) so as far as the speed is concerned you can go as fast as you like Since (it will not buen your paint) but i recommend not going faster than 3 on the dial since what will do the job is the products and the pads.

Now on to the pads, different pads in different colors. The color determines how abrasive they are and can help you make a choice according to the product you want to use. Id contact the supplier to ask for the meaning of each color as many manufactures use colors for their pads in defining the cutting ability but my experience has been that black, red color pads are for finishing the job and applying a wax or sealant, white and green usually have low cutting ability and can be used for polishes and paint cleaners, orange and yellow are medium to heavy cutting ability respectively and thats for paint renovation with a heavy compound cleaner to removed water spots, bird droppings stains, deep scratches etc.

So if you are willing to go all out, start with your paint cleaner, follow with sealant and finish with wax.

Hope i helped
